A few questions:

1) Does the IA-1 allow USB booting from anything other than a Zip?
2) Where is the Removable Compact Flash located?

Wireless,
If there is an option in the bios for usb booting, I have not found it. This is probably something that is unique to the emachine unit as it does not have a compact flash socket. AFAIK, the IA-1 only lets you boot from 4 potential sources: Each drive on each IDE controller.

That is, the A: drive (what is that???), the internal sandisk and the external compact flash. There does not appear to be a 4th drive.

My IA-1 does not boot from an external USB HD, and the unit's light does not come on until partially through the win98 boot sequence.

The compact flash socket is located on the right side of the unit and fortunately has an ejector mechanism.

Thanks for the info...

I was hoping to use something like the following to boot from...

http://www.iitem.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=671905%7C935268&PRID=1058796

It would be ideal for a public kiosk... bring your own boot device and storage! Less worry about public snooping!

Wireless,
Well, you can still do what you are thinking of but slightly modified - it would have to be with a 256meg compact flash card for win98 or other flavour, or a smaller card if you wanted linux or other OS.

And with 256meg cards being under $100, that is pretty close to the price of the device you mentioned, with plenty more memory to boot.

Then the only thing you would have to worry about would be to actually remember to take the card with you when you left!
