CF to IDE adapter Kit?
Discuss issues with creating a CF to IDE adapter kit for the MSN Companion/ IPAQ IA1

I have read through several messages concerning the possibility of creating a CF to IDE adapter kit for the MSN Companion. I have the capability of creating these kits and would be willing to sell them to interested parties.
I am hoping to create these kits so that there will be no need to rip up the CF slot on the board. I am also hoping to tap into the 5vdc line of the pwr supply by way of a low profile passthru connector to provide the 5vdc power through the adapter to the Harddrive. Hopefully, this will eliminate the need to tack solder a 5cdv line on the board.

I know that Brian (Embeddedman) has created the schematic already. I have tried to retrieve his pdf file but it appears the site is down. Anyone else have the schematic? Brian, do you still have the eagle schematic and layout?.

Even with everything I mentioned above, I believe I can keep the cost far under the $43 that advantech is charging (and you still have to rip up the CF slot to get the advantech adapter to fit).

Let me know what you think.

Maxx

The cf to ide connector doesnt seem like an easy hack. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get it to boot for over a month. Seems alot of people are getting it to work more easily with a cf card. A cf card is the more expensive route and has limited space. Have you been succesful attempting this hack.

Maxx,
Yes, I did get the schematic done, and it does work. I have finished a layout of the schematic I have, but I'm not at all happy with it, so I'm going to re-do the schematic to take out the 40 pin connector for the normal IDE drive, and I'm going to take out the 4 pin power connector. Then I'm going to re-lay out the board with a through-hole 44 pin 2mm IDE connector rather than the surface mount one I've got in there right now.
Yah, you should be able to make these guys pretty cheap. The most expensive part is the CF connector, cheapest I've found them is like $6 each. Yikes.

If you e-mail me, I can send you what I've got so far and you can play with it or build it or whatever. E-mail me at brian_schmalzNOSPAM@yahoo.com (remove NOSPAM) and I'll forward the Eagle files to you. I'm glad you want to work on this - I just haven't had the time!

I'd like to know when someone has created such an adapter that will allow me to hook up some kind of IDE drive without hacking up my hardware too badly. I don't mind cutting a trace or tapping a power source here or there... that's pretty trivial. But I don't want to modify the case too much or any of the other hardware that would prevent me from using the CF slot for normal usage for example.

I'd be willing to pay up to $50 for such a device.

Maxx,

My buddies and I would be interested in purchasing this adapter from you. How much do you think it is going to cost? Also, I have a copy of the schematic you are looking for somewhere. If you send me your e-mail address I will send it to you.

I posted these in an earlier thread.. I found two compact flash card adapters that allowed you to connect a drive without cutting the rails off,
this one... http://www.accurite.com/CFAdapter.html has a power adapter for 5 volts to the hard drive. If someone could remake this smaller and to fit nicely inside without cutting I'd love to see it...
