I've been working on a workstation image based on wes's buildkit. So far, I've removed some of the less functional programs and added/upgraded to the following.

pdksh 5.2.14 (vi command line editing/tab completion in the default profile :D)
vim 6.1
openssh 3.1 (ssh and scp)
nmap2.54 (nmapfe also, but the font is pretty nasty)
a great graphing calculator

I've also changed changed a few of the terminal settings and such. Hopefully someone will find this usefull.
The image can be found at:

How much room did you have left over? Also, and I know this is a pretty tall request, but would you be willing to do a "custom" image? I like the slimmed up image, but I miss xmms and the mixer. I would think that getting rid of a lot of the extra apps in the original image should have left a fair amount of room.

Would you be willing to create that workstation image with:
(-) nmap
(-) openssh (assuming ssh is still present)
(-) ti85 emulator
(+) xmms
(+) mixer

and, if you can, some true-type fonts? I think the midori homepage gives a link on where to obtain the basic web fonts from Microsoft. The end result, I think, would be quite useful. (and the true-type fonts would make Opera look a *lot* better.)

I've just released an updated version which includes support for the internal modem and ppp.
Like the previous image it can be found at http://www.sevenn.net/ia-1/workstation.img
The following have been added:

Kernel 2.4.18
LtModem Drivers 6.00c2
eznet
cu

To set up ppp simply edit /tmp/config/eznet.conf and /tmp/config/ppp.resolv.conf, freeze then reboot. Chose "Dial Up" from the the network menu and "Hang Up" to disconnect. You can also talk directly to the modem by chosing "Modem Terminal" in the Utilities menu. I plan on making the configuration and dialing more elegant with a cgi and/or a frontend for eznet.

Re; request for custom image
I plan on making a few more images after cleaning up the ppp setup..well see :)

got PPP?

Glad you do. I'll flash it on my IA-1 and give you some feedback. From the sounds of it, it's still not a "user-friendly" configuration though. :)

Hmm. Network->Dial Up = no dialing. I can talk to it via CU (but the damned thing doesn't understand &M0 for some reason - modem screeches at 2:26am are a BAD thing) but it won't dial via the shortcut.

I assume that when editing the eznet.conf you get rid of the leading spaces and the O, right? So, my conf is this:

lname
passwd
1234567 *no dashes, right?*
service ia1 *or is this line unneccessary?*

and the same for the ppp.resolv.conf file right?

search domain.name.here
nameserver 123.456.78.90

The modem does work. Just might be a shortcut issue.

The zeros are the record number.. eznet doesn't really expect you to hand edit the .conf file and it supports multiple dialup accounts..

I'm not certain how sevenn wanted you to edit it.. but you can use "eznet --help" to see the options/examples.

The first two fields are meant to stay. I know this seems illogical, but thats eznet's format. I plan on adding a cgi to write the file, so this wont be an issue soon. I made a test user "ia1test" with the password "ia1pass" on my dialup server (7428868), dialed in and posted this reply.
Here is my config :)

@ia-1:/tmp/config> cat eznet.conf
0 user ia1test
0 password ia1pass
0 phone 7428868
0 service ia1
@ia-1:/tmp/config> cat ppp.resolv.conf
search elmnet.net
nameserver 206.26.221.2
nameserver 65.171.196.240
@ia-1:/tmp/config>

(and now ill delete the user :p)

Is there a possibility of a bare linux OS with X and the Citrix ICA client with USB NIC modules ? This would mak for a "perfect" thin client replacement if it would connect to a Citrix server. Also the RDP client (with the updates) from rdesktop.org would be great too. please help

Thanks for the excellent image!

Would you consider releasing a new version with some of
the fixes suggested in other posts? Specifically:
1) Change /tmp/config/etc/mtab to a symbolic link to /proc/mounts
2) Fix /sbin/init as per neptune's suggestion to move network start and
portmap lines before the call to /usr/sbin/init which runs XFinit
(this will allow users to configure automatic mounts at startup)
3) Add neptune's backlight screen saver daemon (ia1blssd)
4) Remove dillo and nmap and add xmms and mixer (if they fit) as radarman
requested in an earlier reply.
5) Remove some cruft like /tmp/config/oldmenu and /tmp/config/profile.bak
6) Is there a way to change the default background image?
Thanks again for an excellent image. This really makes the IA-1 a fun
machine to hack and use.

I already tried that (I mentioned that in my orignal post). Do you have a distro that is
known to work with PPP/Modems or know how to access the CGI script to configure the PPP. Anyone????
