the topic pretty much says it all. a local store has 5 of these things in stock for $45 each(new unopened box, clearance). down side no returns :( i would enjoy a couple of these if i know for sure they are hackable but i have yet to find a way to tell the difference between them physically. does anyone know if there is a difference? ty for any input

There was significant discussion about this in the board a few months ago (when we all first started getting these). I don't know that we reached specific consensus, but you should be able to get a hint or two. Search the board.
I believe that there were obvious differences, like bezel labels, even the box.

I think that if you can boot them up you can tell the hackable from the unhackable ones. I know out of the 3 that I bought, the only 1 that was unhackable booted differently. Pay attention to the blinking cursor in the upper left corner at boot time. If it jumps down about 3 lines before the pretty MSN screen kicks in then theres a good chance it's hackable. The one that is not hackable does not show the flashing cursor jump..at least that's what happened to me. I read somewhere that if they come in a Red and White box that they are not hackable, but thats what all 3 of mine came in. 2 from Walmart and 1 from a computer show. I'd say for $45 I'd get them all and sell them. :)
