WANTED: Hacked Flash Card

Was wondering if anybody could hook me up with a hacked flash card. I dont really have the resources to do it myself, nor the knowledge, but it'd be hella nice to be able to use my own internet account on a non-micro$oft OS. My email is dough@advancedvisuals. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by a 'hacked flash card,' Revo. AFAIK, most of us are using plain vanilla CF cards, simply as a means of transferring one of the half-dozen or so available images into our IA-1s. The initial "hacking" required is to get at the IA-1's CMOS setup to tell it to recognize the CF card so the image can be installed into the internal solid state drive on the IA-1.

Can you explain a little more precisely what it is you want?

Ah, okay. I was under the impression that people were actually replacing the internal Flash card. So what you guys are doing is just putting the image on a new flash card and putting that flash card into the IA-1? See.. I know a lot about computers, but I've never tried doing anything like this before, especially with Flash cards..

Actually, you can either overwrite the image on the internal SanDisk, completely replacing the built-in software, or run an alternate OS from a CompactFlash card (if you actually like the MS software or want to keep the warranty). The medium for doing either is through the compact flash slot. The only thing to "hack" is the BIOS, which on some models is as simple as shorting a jumper, and on others as difficult as replacing a BIOS ROM.

It breaks down like this:
C: -> on-board 16MB SanDisk
D: -> external CompactFlash socket

The hardware itself is just a misshapen, low-end AMD laptop.

So basically all I need to do is reset the BIOS(I have the easily hacked ia-1), copy an image of an OS onto a CompactFlash card, put the card in the ia-1 and with a few more steps I am set?

Yep, that's the beauty of the MSN companion machines - easy to "upgrade" If you don't muck up the case too much taking it apart, no one can tell you've been in there (assuming you re-enable silent boot before you pack it up for warranty service).

If you want to write over the onboard flash, you will (obviously) need a card bigger than 16Mb to hold a tiny OS, flasher utility, and the image file. If you just want to run from the CF - you can put whatever will hold your OS and files in there.

You can, if you are so disposed, install a hard disk and do all kinds of other mods, but all you absolutely require is a CF card and a screwdriver.
