CE1000/Clipper - NEW
Apparently new discovery relating to the Clipper

New MessageCE1000/Clipper - NEW (modified 0 times) haiqu
Profile
My new Blue CE1000 arrived with today's mail, and I've already tried the paperclip trick with no joy. I got the 162 error, indicating that this is supposed to be one of the "unhackables". The system displays a Be logo and then goes to a blank screen with only a cursor (hand) icon visible, and all that seems to do anything useful is the sound volume controls.

However, while screwing around, I found something that apparently no-one else has previously reported. Try this:

1) Plug power in, and wait until the cursor appears. Unplug the power at this point. You will land in the BeIA Flash recovery screen.

2) Select from English, French and Spanish

3) Select recovery option, rather than reboot option.

4) Select ethernet, and (assuming it's connected) it will autoconfigure for the current connection.

From here, you can see that the system was designed to be reflashed across the internet!! This could be quite useful for new users if a working image can be set up at a known location. The day of the paperclip may even be gone if this works.

Have fun!

From an email to Travis Geiselbrecht, ex-Be employee:

Hi Travis,

My Compaq CE1000 / Clipper arrived yesterday, and I've been having fun
playing around with it. I was wondering if you can recall the key combo
to get into the bios on these things so I can try enabling the CF slot
as primary boot device. On the IA-1 evidently you have to clear the bios
then hold the "Compaq" key while booting, but this didn't work on the
CE1000.

Any hints on what you can actually do with BeIA 1.0 would also be
useful, since (despite it being new) no manuals came with it. All I have
is a blank screen with a movable mouse cursur, and can't find any menus
at all. Although I did manage to get into the reflash utility once.

Rob

Reply, via IRC:

<geist> yes, the answer is 'I dont know' and 'not much'
<haiqu> Oh, ok. Thanks.
<geist> so it actually has beia on it?
<geist> where did you get it from?
<haiqu> Yup. From a guy in the US.
<geist> so it just boots into some ui?
<haiqu> He sold one on eBay, so I emailed him and asked wherre it came from. He said he could get me one, and did.
<geist> if it has a CF slot, I think it'll try to boot it first
<geist> as far as I remember, there is no bios screen
<haiqu> It comes up with Compaq logo, then cursor, then Be logo and BeIA 1.0 identifier, then mouse cursor.
<haiqu> Boot from the CF ? Cool, I'll do that then.
<haiqu> It also has a smartcard slot.
<geist> I guess, but that was not the same clipper
<geist> different design than I remember I guess
<geist> no smartcard on the one I remember
<haiqu> It's a CE1000 according to the bottom plate. It's blue.
<geist> probably why beia doesn't work, that build was probably not for that particular hardware
<haiqu> Uh, right. Wonder how it got on there then? It's brand new.

Hope this data proves useful.

And do you have any pictures?

How about the fuill specs for the CE1000?

I would like to work on one of those units as well.

The guy I bought it off said there were one or two left, but that was a month ago before i ordered mine. He did me a favour by ordering it from the dealer where he bought his own unit, and getting them to deliver directly to me in Australia. It cost me US$150 including shipping.

Links to pics of this unit have already been posted to this group, but I don't have a link handy, so you'll have to search a bit.

OK, here's a link to some photos of the unit, posted by Curious on 10 March.

I don't get the Stinger/BeIA screen at all on mine, just the basic BeIA 1.0 UI with no logos.

Hope that answers the questions.

Keep an eye on eBay is about the only advice I can give about that. The guy who got mine advertised his as a "blue IA-1" and he probably still doesn't know what it was.

Further info, for the rest:

I got frustrated at not being able to do anything with it, so decided to try loading Airman's be2.img via the LAN here at home. I set it up at a known location under my Xitami webserver on the main machine, then did the "pull the plug as it boots" trick as advertised above. Results:

Do you want to use an 'ethernet' network connection or a 'modem' for the recovery (type 'ethernet' or 'modem')? ethernet

Trying to configure ethernet --- Success

Please enter the recovery download location (HTTP:// or FTP://)

haiqu,
if you have a look at Dano, and read through the BeIA PDF files, you should find out more info on the use of the restore scripts that those BEIA img's use.

Also, if you put one of those img's onto a cf card, and mount it from BeOS, you may be able to get more info on restoring a BeIA img.
I know there is info on doing so, but I am not in front of my PC or my dt300 at the moment.
Will take a look when I get home, and post what I can find out.

haiqu, dont know if you have read the appropriate pdf file yet (BeIA Client Platform that comes with Dano - CP_6_Miscellaneous.pdf)
but here is a brief snip on why your update is failing:

"All packages provided by the update server must be zipped & digitally signed."
(so just telling it where the new img file is wont work, it need to be a pkg I think, & I am not sure on how that works)
"BeIA uses the Digital Signal Algorithm(DSA) program dsasig."
(you may be able to get aroung this by changing the update script, but you need to be able to access the desktop to do that)

Thats some good info...

I'm still waiting for the clipper to come in... its shedueled for delivery on monday...

Do you happen to know what they use to digitaly sign it with? Is it in the dev tools? And is spoken about in further docs?

I received the standard IA-1 on monday but have NOT been ablr to make a bootable disk, I get "Missing Operating System" or "Cannot access hard disk" all the time...

I have used the search and tried EVERY suggestion available for Win 95/98 and NOTHING works.

What have you tried? And is your reader/writer USB? I have a 340MB Microdrive.

I just want to get Be up and running aleady on this thing!

Do you know if BeIA has any disk partitioning tools built in in any versions that I could bo the drive work from?

Or if I could run the BeOS 5 disk tool on it via network. Is it binary compatible? Because then I could acess the drive and from there have it partitioned for BeOS and it would all be good!

Any ideas would be nice.

As well with the toolkit can you design your own BeIA platform and use in it only what you want to implement and maintain the desktop? I have it but haven't had time to install it yet.

They use dsasig to sing the files.
Its not part of the dev kit as far as I can see. And i don't know where to get it from.
but if you can alt+q to the desktop, you coul change the scripts telling them not to look for a signed file.

My cf reader is a USB Sandisk SDDR-31, and it is fully supported by BeOS EXP/Dano http://snotling.free.fr
You can use a cf-ide adapter or a pcmcia adapter.

I cannot offer to much help with clippers/IA-1 though, as I do not have one.
Originally I was going to purchase a unit from Curious, but for whatever reason, it fell through so I got a DT Research DT300 instead (from the Be sale)

Are you unable to use the BeIA images from ia1hacking.com ??
These are reported to work fine by others? Try using a 16MB cf card instead of the micro drive.
Or, perhaps you could try mounting the microdrive and installing Dano (r5.1d0) onto it?

Ok, I've tried installing DANO 3 times, my cd appears to be bad.

I've downloaded that exact image 3 times in the last month and EZ CD Creator said it is bad as well as Sony CD Extreme locks up at 6.66MB in, Nero doesn't burn understand the file format, CDR Win doesn't burn ISO, Fireburner burns it as audio and Clone CD doesn't do ISO.

I've been to get this up for about a month... So far NO DANO FOR ME!!

Any Ideas????

I cannot burn inside of BeOS 5 because I have a Sone Spressa USB CD-RW drive adn it will not support it.

Any clues????

And about the Ia-1 boot situation... I'm picking up a CF 64MB card today to test. The sandisk reader/writer doesn't work with the Microdrive, so I use a different one. Do you know if other USB reader/writers are supported in BeOS????

Nero burned that file just fine for me. I even made it bootable.
Tell nero you want to burn an img and point it to that file.

I only know of the USB Sandisk SDDR-31 working under dano. BeOS doesn't support any cf readers.
Further more, the sandisk SDDR-31 can read/write to type1/type2 cf cards and IBM microdrives. Buy it :)

Hi Coward!

Uh, it sits here collecting dust. I just spent three months intensively working on powerline carrier networking systems for emergency lights, and just didn't have the time to pursue it.

On top of that I just started a new importing business and have had to learn PHP & MySQL to set up several websites. I also decided that if I was going to set up one here I may as well host sites for a few friends too, so I'm now running that as a second business. :)

Having said that, I just ordered a 128Mb compact flash card to continue with the experiments and hope to have the opportunity to get into that over Christmas.

I haven't kept up with the board, did you find a machine?

Coward,

Just re-read the message thread and noticed you've said "BeOS doesn't support any CF reader/writers".

I got around that one by buying a CF adapter that attaches as a second IDE device and fits in the spare 3 1/2" FDD slot.

Neat, eh?

Just checked out Coward's reference to the Dano file CP_6_Miscellaneous.pdf last night.
One encouraging thing I noticed while reading those docs is that there is a default DSA key used while development is in progress. With a bit of luck the version of BeIA 1.0 in the Clipper is set to recognise that key.

Oh, and dsasig is included in the dev kit. :)

Carbon,

Interesting. However, you didn't mention which version of BeIA this comes from. Assuming they kept the same key from BeIA 1.0 (a long shot) it would still have to be cracked for the PRIVATE key.

It's a dead end, guys. Hacking at the bios hardware seems to be the only real solution here.

blue clipper? it may just be possible that, for reasons only known to Compaq and Be, that the system requires a smart card key similar to the ones used in satelite tv boxes. This may have been an alternative route which they could have used to regulate use of the machine. I originally thought that my clipper was defective, however, similar symtoms IE: compaq welcome logo-beia 1.0 welcome screen-white screen with movable cursor and workable volume control, makes me think the thing may be locked out. It is possible that the plan was to offer different subscrption packages which could be regulated by giving the customer a smart card containing their individual profile. This is just a theory and may be a new angle from which to attack the unhackable. a programmed card could be the solution to the lock out. I am interested in any method which I could use to access the BIOS on 178358-003 .

hi

you sell them so expansif !!!!!
I've a CE1000 bought for $50
and actually in waiting for receiving a standard white IA for $46

all on eBay ...

For people who want to use CE1000, the only choise is to install Midori Linux distribution, and you could
use all feature like with the BeOS and many more...
I use CE1000 with BeOS, but it was restricted to only browsing web sites, and checking mails ...

Actually I try to use my Clipper for :
- picture frame viewer
- connecting to wireless network (works fine with 802.11b Linksys WUSB11 v2.5)
- browsing web
- checking network connection state and report faillure on Maillight / Powerlight / Netlight
- including scheduling to activate / desactivate screen at programmed time (during night ...)
- Midori, include XMMS (winamp for Linux) and could play streaming audio
- use it for get up the morning : displaying weather prevision (web site) and listening mp3 from streaming radio
- use MisterHouse, automation software, and connecting CM11 to it (automation module to drive all others modules)

and all into 32Mo

If I success in building this image ... I will post it into http://www.ia1hacking.com

Emboldened by this, I downloaded both the Be and Be2 image from IA1hacking.com and got both to work on the same IA-1. Thanks ukewarrior!
