Compaq Ipaq USB ethernet & Midori?
Compatibility question.

Hello,

Thanks to the great info here and at ia1hacking I flashed Midori over the MSN WinCE of my IA-1.
I have Midori running, but my USB NIC isn't working. I have a Compaq 10/100 ipaq adapter It works under WinCE. It's connected to my Linksysys router.

If it is not possible to get this to work w/ Midori, does anyone know of a distro that it is compatible with?

Also, so I can check compatibility, how can I tell what chipset the USB NIC is based on?

Thanks for any help
SunMicroGuy

There are a lot of ways to find this out.

1) Do a search on Google by manufacturer
2) Open it and read the data off the chip
3) Run some kind of USB scanning software

OK,

I opened up my Compaq HNE-200 10/100 Ethernet USB Adapter P/N:243652-001

The chip in it is a:
ADMtek
Pegasus II
ADM8511
0130WAADK21192.1

I did a search on the words:
pegasus midori
to match all words, but nothing was found on the board :(

I'll continue looking to see if I can find how to add a driver to the IA.
I'm familiar w/ Solaris, but this is my first Linux excursion. Please excuse my ignorance...
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The Pegasus based USB Ethernet adapter I use worked right away with Midori.

Here are the details: The adapter is Proxim PN796 and uses the AMDtek AN986 chip set.

Does anyone know if the Wildwildwes Midori image support Pegasus II based USB ethernet?

If not, I'll probably get a new adapter.
From what I see the NetGear EA101 is compatible and I can get one for $17.54 shipped.

Thanks,

I use a pegasus II adapter with it myself (the 3com 460b). You can get one for only $5 here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?sku=c155-1100

Maybe someone could help me then...

I have a Pegasus II based card (details in thread) and the midori_3.img image.
I dolly over the image and boot the IA-1.

I actually have to remove the USB mouse and plug it back in after "loading ..." passes or it freezes there.

I get to X and open a terminal window.

I typed:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
and it says their is no device.

ifconfig -a shows only a lo device.

Did I miss a step? If not and I get the USB NIC WWW mentioned(3com 460b), should it work using what I did above?

Thanks much!

The Midori 3 image work "out of the box" with my Pegasus II adapter. It's a Linksys USB100Tx version "B1". I did have a defective adapter that when connected would freeze the boot up process if connected. I swapped it out at a local store for a new one and that works great. The link light doesn't work.

I read in another post about the QNX image that there are two USB controllers on the IA-1. The left hand set (when looking from the back) is 0. Try moving it to one of those two and see if that helps.
Good luck,
Wiz

wildwildwes, Thanks for the tip on the 3com 460b USB NIC.
I plugged it in and it came up immediatly!

Thanks to everyone else for the troubleshooting assistance too.

Anyone know why the Compaq iPaq NIC based on the same chipset(pegasus II) wouldn't work?

probably just a Vendor_ID (VID) and Product_ID (PID) value incompatibility. if the pegasus kernel module isn't compiled with the specific values presented by the USB device when it's connected, then the driver won't recognize it.

the Audrey hackers went through this quite a bit with the KLSI/Kawasaki 10BaseT USB adapters, where several manufacturers all used the same chipset/module, but all had unique VID/PID combinations for their adapters.
