Midori Decompressed
Move Midori from flash to CF

Does anyone know what would be required to "decompress" Midori? I like Midori, but it uses so much memory for its filesystems that there isn't enough left to run much. Midori offers some nice features, particularly as it concerns appliances, but I would like to load it like a "normal" linux distro on a 340Mb microdrive.

Questions:
- Does the kernel support booting from an ext2 partition?
- What needs to be tweaked (other than configuration files) to support booting from disk2?
- Can cramfs support be removed to save memory for additional stuff?
- Could the WildWes image be recreated on this decompressed installation?

Might be an interesting avenue of inquiry, and I'm going to load Linux on a spare HD to play around with the build kit.

You can build any kernel you like for Midori... It's pretty straighforward.

Booting from the microdrive shouldn't be a problem either... see the posts here about booting from hdc

The other stuff is hard. Midori is specically built for embedded stuff, read-only access. It's very difficult to get away from cramfs.

If you have the space, and need a "normal" linux environment, I would suggest using a more standard distribution or rolling your own.

I know how you feel...

Right now I'm planning to load Gentoo linux on a 340MB partition on my HD then use Ghost to transfer it over the my Microdrive.

From there I can choose what I compile and it will prepare it specifily for the CPU with whatever options you want streigh from the FTP.

Thats the plan and if I'm not happy with it I'll throw BeOS 5.1d DANO on my clipper.

Are you having any trouble getting your MD to boot dos? I can only image it with linux to have it boot but its kinda sketchy... And I get the HDC interup failure when the kernal is booting with jailbait or midori.

I figured as much... I had hoped Midori would be more configurable, because it appears to be fairly memory light beyond its filesystem requirements. Fortunately, for my application, it is sufficient.

If I need to do anything more "interesting", it looks like I'll need to learn to "roll my own"
