Is the red white box hackable to install linux or windows?
I've heard yes / no reports, walmart has some here for 52 bucks, i wouldn't mind having an xterm.

I've heard mixed things about the red/white boxes too.

Open one up and see if it says iPAQ on the screen. If it DOESN'T, you're in luck.

Even if it does, I'd buy a couple and sell them on e-bay. They go for about 100-120 there. Even if you just sell 1, you'll get yours for free.

Wish my wallmart had them :)

The red-white box refers to the shipping box. Most of the hackable units have been older units and refurbs - and shipped in plain brown boxes. The newer, unhackable, units have been shipping in nice pretty red and white boxes with lots of happy pictures on them.

The actual qualifier appears to be the presence of absence of "iPaq" on the front bezel. If a unit doesn't have iPaq on the front, it is most likely hackable. If it does, it is hackable - but you will have to replace the BIOS chip physically.

It seems the IA2s might have the same mobo as the IA1s (just from what i've heard, since it seems the mobo in the IA1 can drive a CRT as well as the LCD and everything else is similar). However, AMDLifer in the 'COMPAQ IA-2' thread, who actually has an IA2 says that it seems to be unhackable. He was thinking about ripping out the onboard sandisk (yikes) and you just mentioned that you can replace the bios. I'm just getting back into playing w/ this thing after a few months of slacking off and they hadn't gotten a good bios replacement set up yet when i left. Has it been done and tested now? If so, would you mind putting a few links to threads/web sites with more info in the 'COMPAQ IA-2' thread? I think it could be of great help. Thanks.

I don't know about the IA-2. I would have suspected it would use the same motherboard, to cut down on NRE. After all, why waste money designing a whole new board when you could make some minor mods to an existing board and keep expensive changes at bay. If someone could post some detailed pictures of the IA-2 board, I could tell you with a little more certainty if a BIOS change would do it.

Of course, even if the IA-2 does have the same board, all IA-2's came out well after we figured out how to hack them. As such, I would imagine the will require a physical chip replacement even if the boards are identical.
