Remove Power plug for 10 seconds

Re-insert power plug,

The red Compaq logo will appear along with a little white blinking cursor in the upper left corner. When the cursor drops about an inch, press Control U a few times.
Wait for the service screen to appear.
Erase (hold the right arrow key till you reach the end then back space over all the text) the user name and replace with your ISP user name Tab to the next field Erase the password and replace with your ISP password
Tab to next field Erase the phone numbers and replace with your local ISP^Òs phone number
Tab thru to the URL and remove the s from https. Thats about it. It will take a LONG time for the image file to download so go have lunch, out, far from where you are now.

I tried this. I currently had v2 on the internal sandisk, so ctrl-u was a no go. Flashed the original v1 and it worked. Didn't even have to unplug for 10seconds. Just hold the power button for 4 seconds, it reboots, then hold ctrl-u as he says.

This does not allow you to bypass using MSN yet. It only allows you to put in your ISP's number which it will then dial, try to connect to MSN, put in YOUR MSN userid and password and then download version 2. So you still need to have an MSN username and password.

Any other key combos???

I tried this but now my ipaq won't connect to msn, and just talks about "error opening OS image file C: NKO .BIN" and so on. There had been a few letters before my user name when I had done the control U.............does anyone know what those 4 letters are? Maybe if I put things back the way they were, my ipaq will dial in. As it is, it says to call technical support at (888) 386-6497. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

This started working, then the IA-1 dropped the phone connection. When I cycled the power, I got the dreaded "Contact tech support" message. Oh well, that's hacking!

copied the 'virgin' MSN 2.0 / WinCE software from my IA-1 using a CF card loaded with DOS and dolly.exe. it's virgin, because after signing up (six months free, right?) i switched the connection from dial-up to broadband and got the tech support screen when it couldn't detect the USB ethernet adapter. entered the ERASE keyword (thanks, ranman! ) to reset it to the initial MSN 2.0 state following the download.

so, if you have a 32 meg CF card with DOS and dolly, and want a clean 16 meg image of the MSN2.0 software to restore, email me at my message board nickname <at> carolina dot rr dot com . . .

For what it's worth, I got the dreaded "Contact technical support...." screen the first time after attempting to force an update.

After noodling around with it unsuccessfully for a while, I tried re-entering my password in the service screen and removing the "s" from "https" in the download URL. The next time it dial, it failed once, tried again and now seems to be downloading something.
