Possible cooling option. IA-1

Is it possible to run a usb cable out the CF door for the purpose of running a fan (5 or 10 volt?)? I mean we can get the power from the USB and not have to worry about getting it from some source on the motherboard....

I have been having heat problems when trying to use my IA-1 with a 1 gig microdrive...

You know, of course, USB power *IS* coming from the motherboard... I haven't thoroughly looked yet, but it would surely be easier to grab a +5 or +12 on board, right by the chip that needs it, than have some messy stripped usb cable half hanging in, and half hanging out of the case...

bbsux et. al,
I know that my 340mb microdrive gets really hot if accessed a lot to the point where you will burn your finger if you touch for more than 3 seconds. I can't say that I could ever blame a windows crash/hang on the microdrive though at DEFAULT bus speed. While overclocking, the IAone would hang/crash, and I assume that it was the processor that had the problem but I can't say for sure. The microdrive seemed to tolerate the 83.3MHz bus (41.7MHz PCI) speed with no problems - no data was ever corrupted. However, the iaone would lock up after a while running at that speed which I figured was due to the processor overheating. As I mentioned in another thread, the AMD k6-2 333 seemed more stable than the 266 at the higher bus speeds which would make sense.

Is there any plug you could plug into the AT connector (like a pass through type thing) that has the leads coming off, so you don't actually have to cut the cables? Of course, that is probably easy to do, but I sure wouldn't want to mess that up.

I am getting problems not even being able to load windows ME, it will lock up before being done booting...

I am open to getting the 5 volt off the board, but have seen no suggestions of where....

bbsux,
Can you boot into safe mode?

If the microdrive has been sitting for several hours, and then you turn it on, how long after does it crash? 15 minutes? 5 minutes? 30 seconds? How hot is the microdrive after 5 minutes? Mine would only really get hot after many (5+) hours of running with programs running. If it is just sitting there, the whole unit is still hot, but the microdrive seems just warm.

The reason I ask about safe mode, is my initial windows installation would always crash right after the windows screen came up. However, I could boot into safe mode but that was it. No matter what options I picked, the only way was to get rid of the ACPI stuff and use the fail safe bios detection thing.

Also, what I did when I was trying to OC it, I put a big house fan right behind the iaone, turned it on high and that really cooled the entire case and microdrive. You might try that to see if it makes any difference.
