Hey guys. I have been looking for a cheap way to start hacking. I found the MSN Companion for 19.99! wow, thats great for a first time hacker, plus since i am not old enough to get a job :( i have a limited cash flow ~:(. So here is the biggest all-time n00b question... How easy AND is it worth it? i have several laptops, but they're all 486's and i fried my pentium desktop in a small overclock adveture :) so anyway, can i connect a HDD? Windows? I know that linux is possible, and i kinda get the impression that windows is possible form a few threads, but can anyone give me good details about the MSN companion? or maybe a link?

Thanx
Ev

I just got through soldering a hdd connector in and it works great. It was quite hard to do but this was the first hack I've ever done, not to mention the first time I've ever soldered. If your interested in doing the soldering for the hdd your going to need a 15 watt soldering iron. I tried a 30 watt at first and it was very hard but the 15 watt made it alot easier. As for the parts, wire, IDC 44 pin header, and resistor, their kinda hard to find. I know where to get them, it took me about two days to find everything. If your interested in getting those parts just let me know and I sell you some extras I had. By the way the wire is 32 AWG and is teflon coated (very hard to find), this wire wound up costing me 2 weeks and 40 dollars for just a hundred feet. The wire was only like 11 or 12 dollars but after shipping and handling it came out to a little over 40 bucks. I was pissed! Anyways, if you would be interested in buying the parts from me I'll help you get everything up and running.

I'm thinking of making a "how to" for the laptop HDD mod, one that is a little easier to read and understand.(No offense Rob, you helped me out alot. I'm very thankful to you, I know I had to have been getting on your nerves but you hung in there with me till it worked. Thanks again!)

If you don't want to do any hacking, I would like to buy your IA-1. If your interested send me some mail. Also, if you want the parts e-mail me for a price and I'll tell you what all your going to need.

My e-mail is support@qualitycomputerservice.com

Thanks,

axx-hacker,
Did you remove the SanDisk IDE FLASH controller chip, or do you have both devices on your IDE channel? What OS did you install on the hard drive?

I did remove the sandisk, and I installed windows 98 on the hdd. Windows take about 60-120 seconds to load up, but after it loads it runs great. I am really happy with it.

I believe there is a way to leave the sandisk, though I don't know how yet. Talk to ranman he might be able to tell you how.
