USB power problems?

I recently tried using a wireless keyboard/mouse combo on my IA-1, and found that it wouldn't startup with the receiver installed. Unplugging the receiver allowed the unit to start normally. This appears to be the case on all of my IA-1's. This is a bit odd, since the hard drives that people have surely draw more current. Using an ordinary USB mouse doesn't seem to cause problems, nor does a PS/2 to USB adapter.

It could also be a BIOS issue, so I'm going to try a powered USB hub to see if I can get around the problem. Not elegant, particularly given the four USB ports on the back, but worth a shot. Interesting, given that I already use a USB ethernet adapter and a USB mouse.

Has anyone else noticed this?
