I was looking through the completed auctions on ebay for ia-1's and found an auction that claimed there is a new firmware update that will allow any ISP with the MSN software.
Is this true or was the guy kust trying to sell his ia-1 by lying?
Here is the link

Other ads for the blue units have stated they work with any ISP (because they run BeIA) and so he may have gotten the idea from there.

I'd be surprised if MS would do that, but anything's possible.

You can use any ISP with MSN that does not require special connection software:

BUT - what they don't tell you on this site is that it cost you the same as if you would have MSN! T

Actually, MSN has (or had...) a special broadband rate. It used to be $9.95/mo, though the last I heard, it was now $14.95/mo. Downside was that you couldn't dial in for more than 5 hours a month, or they charged you the full rate. (this was allowed to support periodic dial-ins for updates, and initial setup)

Even so, the white IA-1's can't do jack on the Internet without MSN. The update simply allows you to connect via a network instead of a modem - hence "ANY" ISP. It's possible that they also allowed you to dial in via another ISP as well, for those who don't have local access numbers, but it's still just a means of connecting the box to MSN.
