Easier way to clear the bios

I found an infinitely simpler way to clear the bios. no need to remove the RF shield.

1. remove the gray clip at the back.
2. remove the monitor plate with two screws on the case.
3. remove 4 screws holding the lcd in place. (inside the area mentioned in 2) (lift up gently and flip lcd forward)
4. remove the 4 screws on the bottom of the system
5. open case... this is tricky.. gently ease the two plastic grooves where the gray piece was. pry the sides.
6. locate the cf card port. get a good flashlight. to the left of the port. about three inches, find the jumper THROUGH the holes in the metal RF shield. see http://www.linux-hacker.net/ipaq/ for a picture of the jumper.
7. using a small, long nail, or wire, or hole punch contact the left-most pin (which is the middle pin) of the jumper (the jumper is open on top) THROUGH the hole in the RF shield and then short that with the shield itself. This is enough to reset the bios.
8. test. if you see a memory count on startup, you have succeeded.

I did this on one system fine. On another I just tried today, it seemed to reset itself somehow to the restricted bios.... i WAS playing with the settings, and might have very well locked it myself... thats my guess, at least... i cant imagine an OS, even a embedded one monkeying with the bios everytime on boot..

let me know if this works for you guys..

- most excellent directions! the trick is to simply touch the middle pin (not the 'leftmost' pin, which is exposed) through the TOP of the shield! i used half of a straightened paper clip...

- this worked great for me on my second IA-1 i just got from TD for $99 (btw, the first one had been opened, but the second one was in factory-sealed condition from Compaq)

- this reduces the need to remove only the four bottom screw, the one screw holding the gray plastic piece on the back, the two screws on the hinge cover, and the four hinge screws... back together in less than a minute, and not a scratch of damage or appearance of modification!

- if only you had posted this a month ago, my first IA-1 wouldn't have suffered a sucking right-hand side chest wound, due to my impatience and ineptness w/a Dremel cutter (it's recovering quite nicely, albeit patched up with silicon caulking)...

OMG! How Totally cool!

total time from opening box (tigerdirect) to memory counter: 16min.
of which 10 was searching the net for other ipaq-hacks.

thanks!

I tried this and thought everything was going well until I reapplied the power, at which point all I got was a single horizontal line across the display. I hope the unit isn't hosed. Anybody know what to do?

I actualy opened the whole thing. I set the jumper on pins 2 and 3 then forgot to set them back. All I got was a line across the middle of the screen. It worked fine again after resetting the jumper. Did you remember to unground the pin?
