Blue IA-1 modem problems

I just bought a blue ia-1 off ebay. It was advertised to be able to use any isp. It came new in the box, but with no set up manual. I went into the connection page and entered as much info as I could, but still can't get it to connect to the internet. It's asking for an init string, etc. I need any and all info possible to get this thing up and running. Please Help!

I assume you already have a regular ISP - you can't use MSN, AOL or any other ISP that has special "connection software" - then it should be fairly simple.

If that's true, then all you need is your username, password and the phone number. Mine connected up right away. The init string is to allow you to disable call waiting (*70, etc). Note, it will take about 30 seconds to connect.

Radarman, are you saying that I can't use msn on this blue ipaq? I'm going to try it with no init string, but what phone number should I put in on the connection settings? I need a little more info from you please. Thanks.

It may be possible to get a 16Mb MSN image on there, but I haven't tried. As it comes, though - no. It was intended for a different (specifically, European) market. If you follow the list (and you haven't messed with the BIOS), then the clippers will boot from a CF device. You might try flashing the MSN software over.

What is a CF device? Look, obviously I am not as knowledgeable as you are about computer systems in general...I need specific instructions from the time I turn the machine on all the way through. I played around with it a little yesterday after hearing back from you and I have it to the point that it will get online, but I can't get off of the main screen where it says favorites, search, my info, etc. It won't even allow me to put in a web address - it says check URL. I've tried http and https. Nothing is working. Can you help? Thanks

CF = compact flash. The IO port on the side of the IA-1 will accept a standard compact flash device, allowing you to load alternate operating systems on it. There are a tremendous number of threads here regarding this, but in short, you will need to find or create a bootable compact flash card, copy the MSN image and a disk to disk copier utility to the card, and overwrite the software on your machine.

If you haven't messed with your system's BIOS yet, don't - a virgin clipper will boot a compact flash card if it detects one.

Otherwise, you might consider trading with someone who has an IA-1 with the MSN software preloaded.
