Help Creating Bootable CF

I've got a sandisk 64MB card, and a usb SDDR-31 sandisk CF adapter.
I've got both Win98SE and Win2K installed. However, I was unable to
see the CF card from FDISK or Ranish.

I did have the card plugged in when rebooting the PC. Has anyone else
achieved success using this (or any) usb adapter? If so, which ones work?

Thanks,

Sean

glad to hear that you may have found a solution -- let us know how it works, there's others using different model SanDisk USB CF readers, some with problems, some without. it could certainly be a difference in the setup script for different models, based upon the different product identification codes.

I've tried this and found no success in Win98 or Win98SE.
To "clear" the INT-13 bit, I had to find the entry in the registry.
I couldn't keep the removable option cleared though. I'd clear it,
the system would ask me to reboot, and it would be set again on
reboot.

By the way, I have the sandisk SDDR-31

No luck here either. sandisk SDDR-31 and win98, win98SE
My INT 13 box was greyed out. I had to do some registry editing to get it unchecked but that didn't do the trick either.
Thanks for the idea though.

Ugh stuck again.
I got an IDE -> CF adapter and got my CF card formatted FAT16 with ranish. I created a primary partition, marked bootable, and the MBR is set to standard IPL. I sys'd it from a win98 boot disk after I formatted it from the floppy. When I stick it in the IA-1 I get:
"Disk I/O error
Replace the disk, and then press any key"
It seems like I'm doing something wrong with ranish.
In the BIOS everything is enabled in IDE Devices and Boot Order is D:, C:, A:.
I cursed, I prayed, I waved the magic chicken bone. Not quite sure what to do next.

GRISHNAKH:

you said after I formatted it from the floppy. if you used the DOS format command from a floppy disk, chances are you overwrote the Ranish FAT-16 partition entry with a DOS FAT-12 entry. Look at it again in Ranish Partition Manager, and see what it says. Once you've formatted it with Ranish as FAT-16 <<32Mb you only need to SYS it, not format it again...

hope this helps.

I can't seem to get it working for me. I've tried FAT16 <32 and FAT16 DOS with a 16meg and a 64meg card.
I delete everything but the MBR, which is standard IPL. Insert a FAT16 partition, press B to make it bootable, and F to format it.
Then I exit ranish and sys c:. That should do it right?

GRISHNAKH:

that sounds right -- but you must mean some other drive than C: (your hard drive??) in your SYS command, right ?

what IDE-to-CF adapter device are you using, and what brand/model of CF cards?
what version of Windoze?
what version of Ranish?

just wondering...

hmm it's an IDE -> CF adapter I got from ACScontrol.com.
I only have one PC at home so I have to disconnect my hard drive and connect the CF adapter.
It's set up to be the master device on my primary chain so it shows up at C: and I boot with a win98 boot disk.
The 16meg CF is a Kodak, which I THINK is a rebranded Sandisk. The 64 is a Viking.
Ranish 2.40, maybe I'll try 2.41 beta next.

Does anyone have a bootable CF image I can download? My SCSCI drive shows up as D: so I can put it on there and dolly it to my CF and that SHOULD work, right? Or just contact me to email it to my main email. I have broadband so the size it's a big deal.

unfortunately, my CF image is ~~250MB, from a 256 MB CF card. i don't have anywhere to post it, and it's too large to e-mail. so, if anybody has the web space, speak up now, and i'll FTP it over. it's Win98SE, with IE 5.0, 3C19250 (KawasakiLSI) and 3C460B (ADMtek Pegasus II) USB Ethernet drivers, the CyberBlade video chip, the VIA 82C686 South Bridge drivers (sound works !!), but no modem driver (yet.)

another alternative would be to open an FTP port over my broadband connection, but that's kinda risky, these days.

maybe burning a CD-ROM with the driver zips in separate directories would work? snailmail is slow, but CD-ROM's go by First Class mail in about three days? e-mail me at my message board nick AT carolina DOT rr DOT com, and we can work something out...

Here's more weirdness. I'm using a win95 bootdisk with ranish 2.41 beta. Now I get "Missing operating system."
In ranish I made sure the MBR was there, inserted a FAT16 partition, and marked it bootable. Then rebooted and sys'd the CF.
I don't know why I'm getting that error message since i sys'd the CF from the floppy. Well at least my ia-1 actually sees the CF now. But thanks to keith721 I now have an image of win98. I just need to buy bigger media.

Here is an answer to some questions. First, some CF readers are not recognized by fdisk or ranish, including some Sandisk readers (per previous posts) and my Lexar Model GS-UFD-20SA-TP multi-media (CF, SmartCard) reader. Furthermore, and even worse, some readers ARE recognized by fdisk, ranish, etc., but produce corrupted images that will not boot in the IAOne. One of these is a PNY multimedia reader that I got recently free with a 64 MB flash card. I am successful in creating good, bootable CF's with a Memorex CF (only) reader that I bought last night at CompUSA. Those of you who cannot produce a bootable CF for their IAOne should consider the Memorex reader (there are obviously others, too).

I was able to create the bootable CF using an IBM pc-card - CF adapter that I borrowed from
a friend with a microdrive.

Keith,
Are you still looking for a home for that image? Email me at ia1 at i40 dot com. As long as the image isn't going to be hammerd (I doubt it will) I have space for it.
