Looking to part with damaged IA-1 parts/system
Dead IA-1 for salvage or experimentation

I'm not sure what happened to it, but one of my IA-1's has died. It flashes it's LED's but refuses to finish booting. I'm fairly certain the problem is in the BIOS, or at least the socket. I attempted to swap ROM's, and I think I may have bent one of the leads in the socket. So, it's probably recoverable, you would simply need to replace the socket, but I already have 4 of these beasts, and it has been brought to my attention that this is more than I need :)

So, I'd rather sell or trade this system than spend the time to replace the socket. Anyone interested? BTW - this system has been modified with a TennMax cooler, and a K6-2+ (Mobile) processor. It is permanently modded to run at 400MHz. The CF socket has been modded to supply 5V Vcc, but this can be corrected by moving the jumper wire to a 3.3V pad. (or simply using tweezers and replacing the pins to the pads beneath them. Also, the upper part of the clamshell has a regular fan grill installed for better airflow.

If you want a "stock" IA-1, I still have the original heatsink assembly, and CPU's, but some modding would be required to put the jumpers back. It's possible that this system is toast, but someone with soldering skills could revive it. If you can't, you still get a K6-2+ processor (which can use K6mult), decent little heatsink/fan, LCD panel, and power supply. The BIOS in the socket now is a hackable BIOS (from BadFlash) No keyboard or modem (in case you haven't seen my requests for one ;)

Hi Radarman,

From what I red, you install Badflash bios on a socket. If I have a non hackable IA1 and do the same thing, will this allow me to install midori on my machine and finally have a linux machine. For now, it's my IA1 is a brand new dust collector

Thank for any information you could provide

Yep. The trick is getting the original BIOS off. The PWB's are extremely cheap, and I've had a pad lift on every IA-1 I've modded. Fortunately, there is a technician where I work that's been nice enough to fix them. I thought about having him take a look at this system, to see if he can find the problem pin, but I hate to push my luck :)

This system is still available. $25, OBO. (+shipping, in case you live in Antarctica or something... :)
LCD *is* included (as I haven't managed to find another use for it).

It's taking up space, and I'd rather help another hardware hacker, than toss it in the bin.

Tried sending email, but no response. Anyway, my paypal account is jshenry@comp.uark.edu. It's a dead account, but it's verified. (Paypal is kind of retarded about stuff like that) I'm not sure how it would work, but my other email is jshamlet@hotmail.com

I have found a replacement mainboard (hopefully) for this IA-1, so I am going to keep the bulk of it. The mainboard is up for grabs, for the cost of shipping alone, to whoever wants it.

No CPU or modem, but there is a socketted BIOS on the board. Get it FREE for the cost of shipping. If you can fix it - more power to you!

I noticed on the I-Appliance BBS that you said you have replaced the BIOS on some of your IA-1s. I just bought one (my wife convinced me that the blue one was nicer than buying an Audrey) and now am stuck with an "unhackable" Clipper. Of course, I didn't get through all of the postings before I tried hacking it, and now it won't see the CF at all. Great! So, anyway, I would like to know the feasibility of replacing the BIOS, or whether it is even worth it. I would be willing to trade the Clipper for a hackable IA-1 or whatever. I just really want to get off this stupid BeIA 1.0 crap. I noticed that noone could get the OS to load over the network. I also was wondering about the one bookmark that comes in the system: "beos:///?signature=application/x-minitel" . Is there anything I could use this type of URL for, like bringing up a terminal? I tried some different combos, but nothing seems to work.

Thanks for any help you could give.

Matt

Replacing the BIOS chip on an IA-1 is a bit of a tricky affair. The PWB's are not terribly well manufactured, and I've had traces lift everytime I've tried to replace the BIOS. However, if either you, or someone you know, has a good deal of experience with SMT rework, then it is possible - I have three systems that have sockets now. I'm not sure, but I think BadFlash may be willing to do this kind of rework for a fee. You might shoot him an email and see. As a hint, it is vastly easier to scrap the original BIOS than to try and salvage the chip.

However, before you go pulling things apart, you might be interested in knowing that there is a chance you may be able to boot a CF card on your clipper. If you haven't yet drained the battery, and gotten the 162 error, then you may get lucky. I was able to get into the BIOS of an untouched clipper by inserting a CF card. The system even offered a menu when it detected the card. Remember, this trick only works if you haven't reset the CMOS RAM.

If you can get this far, then boot a CF card, and dolly/dd a new OS to the flash memory, and you should be set. Of course, eventually the battery will go down - and you will be stuck with whatever is on the flash device, but hopefully by then it will be something you can live with.

Good luck!
