Can someone please summarize the easy options (and references to where I can find the instructions) for making the IA-1 into a usable broadband internet appliance (on my existing LAN)? I have a USB ethernet adaptor coming. My IA-1 updated to 2.0 overnight.

I currently have 6 Audreys, and it's really easy to configure those with different images, etc. I'd like to get it to a similar state as my Audreys with MP3 capabilities, access to (Windows) network resources and a browser for home automation.

Thanks in advance.

the stock JailBait image at http://nc.flyingbuttmonkeys.com works fine on the IA-1, except with no sound, and it has older versions of the kaweth.o and pegasus.o network modules.

i have a Win98SE DOS image at 16 meg with dolly.exe and part.exe included, and a Win98SE GUI image at 256 meg with video, sound, and 3Com 3C19250 (KLSI 10Mbit) and 3C460B (ADMtek 100Mbit) network drivers included, both available via ICQ file sharing . . .

This sounds like a useful site - once I figure out if this is what I really need.

Like the original poster, I'd like to just get the stock unit usable as a broadband terminal, with my existing LAN. I have the recommended (D-link) USB 10/100 adapter coming (backordered), and I just want to bypass all the MSN stuff and use my LAN and router. I haven't seen any step-by-step instructions on how to do this yet.

Failing that, I'll probably be interested in installing Jailbait, but I haven't seen any step-by-step-for-newbies on this either. I poked around on your site and couldn't even find the image you mention.

Whataver the solution, I'm mostly interested in something I can get going with minimal cost.

nope -- the site's not mine (i don't have one ) that image was originally assembled for the I-Opener, which just happens to have similar hardware as the Compaq IA-1.

the actual images are located beneath the location:
http://nc.flyingbuttmonkeys.com/mirrors/IA1/

somewhat of a step-by-step is available on this message board, at:
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=MSNCompanion&Post=85&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

Jailbait configuration answers are at the Jailbait FAQ page, at:
http://jailbait.sourceforge.net/faq.html

what more could you possibly need? this is a 'hacker' message board, after all
