hwhack was asking in December 2002 for information showing that Vestel had been involved in the manufacture of the E-machines MSN Companion. This doesn't specifically mention the E-machines device, but given the timing of the article (1999) and the description, it sure sounds like it. I think this might do it for him.

Microsoft itself will be announcing an information appliance initiative and several partners who will manufacture the equipment. One of Microsoft's technology partners is Vestel-USA, which is a subsidiary of one of Europe's largest television set manufacturers.

Vestel's technology platform is based on Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, Intel's x86 PC architecture with USB and IEEE-1394 and utilizes off-the-shelf components and technology supported by a broad range of third party software providers.

The Vestel technology platform combines the functionality of an Internet-enabled PC with broadcast TV features, and can include the following capabilities:

- DVD playback with optional Dolby Digital Sound
- Web browsing
- personalized email
- two-way text chat capabilities
- audio playback of compact audio CDs
- Internet-radio station selection and playback
- TV viewing and electronic program guides.

This mixture of rich media types forms the foundation of innovative and feature-rich appliances, such as the Vestel Internet-TV, their Internet Terminal and their Internet Phone. These products will support streaming video and audio playback, as well as on-line shopping and secure electronic commerce applications.

remember that this was a press release before actual production started. the sentence actually reads can include the following capabilities and not 'does include', typical of pre-production advertising hype. i believe the description of collaboration with Microsoft, using Windows CE, the Intel x86 platform, and USB ports, all describe the E-Machines unit fairly well.

anyway, i mentioned that it did not specifically mention the E-machines device, but i was honestly shocked to run across this item, considering that all other references to the unit have disappeared.

I had found a link about the system a while ago just never botherd to post it. But it basicly was just a discrpitve thing about the device being made and agreements between microsoft and the manufacturer.

So, in other words, still nothing conclusive.
