IA-1 upgrades
Added more memory to IA-1, socketed the bios, k6-III 333 upgrade

Here is what I have modified so far.

1. Upgraded to 333 K6-III (left over from my iopener hacking days)with a nice big copper heatsink with fan.
2. Socketed the bios (Maybe tryout the ipoener bios ?), I did a dump of its contents if anyone wants it.
3. Replaced the four SDRAM chips with micron 48LC16M16A2-75 (which should give me 128 Meg), bios only sees 64Meg, may need to modify bios for additional SDRAM rows.

It stills boots wince, waiting for 128 Meg CF. Thinking about replacing the sandisk chip with a bigger one or SmartMedia socket so I can put 128/256 Meg to boot, leaving the CF slot for inputing photos from my digital camera. Also thinking of adding the Ethernet Chip, I think it is the AM79C978A. Can anyone confirm this?

Well I tried out the iopener bios (io256kbios.bin) on this IA-1 and it booted up just like the iopener does (Nothin' but 'Net!). Now we can get into all the bios settings just link the iopener. I am still booting lame wince, it could be time to order a microdrive. Is there a version of the iopener bios that allows you to boot from USB? I think CN902 is a serial port.

rnunes,

Very interesting. What program did you use to flash the iopener bios? And what program did you use to extract a copy of the original bios? I tried uniflash and a different program which gave 2 different results. What is the size of your extracted bios?

Does that iopener bios allow you to make changes to the cpu fsb/multiplier settings (like a softmenu)? If it did that would be great.

Hi ranman,

Bios size is 256K Bytes, if you want it email me rnunes. I unsoldered it from the board and read it with a programmer at work. Then put a PLCC socket in its spot and plugged in the iopener bios. I don't think it has a setting to change the FSB/multiplier setting. I just changed the resistors on the board for my 333Mhz k6-III, looks like there is a spot for a dip switch.

Hi,
Well I finally ripped off the sandisk controller and wired up the an internal IDE connector. There are big test points on the bottom to solder too. I used some super epoxy to glue the right angle 44 pin connector on top of the southbridge chip. I am going to cut a slot in the metal shield for the ribbon cable, the drive will mount nicely onto of the metal housing. I had windows XP on a harddrive and it boots fine, but with only 64 meg of SDRAM its very slow, time to switch back to windows 98. Here are some pictures. Also it seems I had to use the iopener bios for it to boot properly, the IPAQ bios must be looking for some thing specific to do with the sandisk. Hopefully I can take a closeup picture and label all the solder connections.

Were you able to boot from a Compact Flash card while using the IOpener BIOS? If so what brand did you use?
