Ugh.. been reading everything I can about hacking this thing, but I still can't get it to boot a CF. I can get into the BIOS no problem. I had to try three different CFs before finding one that would be recognised. I've set D: to be first boot, C: to second, and Floppy A: to third.

I'm running WinXP, so I was trying ia1hacking.com's XP install instructions. I used Disk Probe to write the eltorito.img to my 128MB CF. My first try booting, I just kept getting a "Boot Failed" error message. I thought maybe the image was corrupt, so I redownloaded it from somewhere else. Now I get a message that says:
"Operating system not found on hard drive.
Operating system not found on hard drive.
Operating system not found on any device. Press any key to try again."

I noticed in the comments for eltorito.img on ia1hacking.com it says:
"The Slackware El Torito image allows you to make bootable removable media. For Win2000/XP systems, dolly this onto your CF card and then use dskprobe to write the appropriate image file onto it."

So... I'm not sure how exactly I'm supposed to do that. Like, am I supposed to use dolly to write the eltorito.img, then figure out where the last sector is and set that as the start point for a midori image or something? I'm thinking about trying to find someone with Win98 to create a boot CF because at this point that seems way easier...

Any thoughts? Suggestion? Portents of doom?

Okay.. nevermind...got it working. FYI for anyone who's interested.. the SIIG USB CF adapter aparently doesn't work. I tried my friend's SIIG PCMCIA CF adapter and his WinXP laptop to write the images to the CF cards and I was able to flash my IA-1 perfectly! Woohoo! I've read in other posts about people having problems with USB CF adapters. I guess I'll know in the future to just avoid them.

I've been able to boot the eltorito using the externel CF card. Then moved it to the
internal Sandisk...but am stuck here. I've fdisked the internal Sandisk and may have screwed things up...could you tell me how to proceed. What format should the internal
Sandisk be. I used the fdisk utility on the eltorito boot img.

If yor running xp or 2000 be sure to check physical drive NOT logical drive in disk probe. but i had a different approach . I ranished my CF bootable , copy a dos boot disk to it (all files remove attributes from bootdisk so you get the hidden ones)put dolly on it as well. and a couple of img's if there is room(I like WWWMidori)dolly them to internal by the following command:
Dolly C:*.img hd129:

I put every img i could find on a usb zip drive (i put the dos/usb driver on my bootdisk , worked great didnt have keep changing img on my cf. )

do it its the only way to learn

Thanks worked great. Win98 DOS and Dolly are the way to go...It does take a while to get the CF Card formatted right. Any tips/links on getting PPP (Dial-up) configured? This is my first use of Linux.

I'm having the same kind of trouble. I'm doing everything per directions on IA-1 hacking.com's win95/98 directions but getting 'invalid system disk...replace the disk, and then press any key' message on the IA-1 when it boots up. Could it be my PC's USB CF reader? Thanks!
