hi, i have another question regarding this new 1a-1 relplaceMent from compaq which is unusable...no o/s. i do know how to do alot on a pc but i am intimidated by the 1a-1 and know nothing abt it. can it be upgraded to be made usable as a stand alone or can the monitor and keyboard be used with a pc running win 98? would someone pls explain to me how to do either one in laymans terms since this is all new to me. if it was a pc, i could work with it, but you guys are the experts. do any of you do conversions on them and if so what would you charge to do one? i'm in texas. thks cheryl

Hello yes you can make it like another pc. there are quite a bit of different ways but all are easily doable. what i'm using mine as is a second computer by the couch. so i don't have to walk to the computer room i can check my email and everything else on it. i'm running midori linux on the internal compact flash and then run realvnc to connect to my desktop pc. so basically i have my desktop next to my couch on a nice little unit that is barely noticable. this is by far the best way for newbies to use it. it requires hardly any modification to the ia1. you have to take it apart to reset the bios but that is really easy if you know how to use a screwdriver and a paperclip. installing linux is also easy. all you need is a compact flash reader/writer and at least a 16mb flash card. all the instructions to do this are on this forum. READ. READ. READ. There is a wealth of knowledge on these things on this forum. i got mine a little over a month ago and had it running in less than a few hours. well since this is the setup i believe to be the easiest to use, the other way you could use the linux image itself to do your browsing, chatting, email etc.. it's fully functional.. only thing is that it's in read only mode.. so any settings are usually trashed once you exit. except for maybe some system settings, there's isn't much room in that internal sandisk to save too much stuff. and you would have to know a little about linux to get some of the networking components to automatically work on boot up etc... grab some coffee and sit down and read these forums.. you will find everything you will need to know as i did.. just make sure you buy a good reader/writer as i read some people have had a hard time with some.

thks so much for trying to help me. this sounds way over my head. i know and can easily work with windows 98se and i know linux is far superior to it, but i don't know that my pea brain can absorb something new after all these years. i'm just a little old lady ...maybe i should just sell this 1a-1 and forget it since it's new...i REALLY do thank you because you took the time out of your busy day to even try. more than most people do these days...thks again! cheryl ;o)
