Actually, an interesting mod idea for an IA-1 with a dead internal flash might be to simply disable the device by lifting a few pins - then adding two (yes Virgina, two) CF devices via the CF slot. I have a dual CF reader which was custom manufactured for me by Mesa Electronics (specifically for building an OS load for my IA-1). I've often thought about getting a reverse CF adapter (the one used for hooking a standard 2.5" HDD to the CF slot), and mounting the dual adapter to the back of the case.

Might be a bit ugly, but imagine stuffing a 512MB CF and a 512MB Microdrive in the same system. :)
