| Actually, you *could* do this, but your CF card would quickly reach the max write limit and start failing. Were this a normal machine, you would just add a lot of RAM, and turn off the swapfile, but that isn't an option here - so you are back to the microdrive.
Unfortunately, the power supply on these things are very marginal. While they may sport 4 USB ports on the back, don't even think about using more than 1 unpowered device back there. By time time you plugged in your camera, USB ethernet adapter, and (presumably) mouse & keyboard, you would have overloaded the onboard power supply. I modded mine to use a faster processor, and I can't even get ONE unpowered device to work without causing the machine to become unstable.
I'm considering removing the original PSU, and wiring up a standard AT power supply to my IA-1 just so I can actually USE the USB ports. Surprisingly, a well made DB15 could more than handle the current load, and fit where the power cord plugs in now. Other options are a DC-DC converter board (such as the mini-ITX boards), but then I have to mess with the ATX -> AT conversion.
