Jailbait kernel panic

Greetings,

I've followed keith721's description on replacing the M$N companion "OS" with Jailbait, but have reached a snag. As linux boots (from the internal Sandisk), everything seems fine until the file system is being initialized (I think) - I get the following messages:

VFS: Cannot open root device "341" or 03:41
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:41

At this point, the IA-1 hangs.

I've read elsewhere on booting in single-user, so attempted an "hdb single" from the LILO prompt, with no sucess.

Any ideas?

sjstein:

where did you get your Jailbait image? if you got the stock V6 image from http://jailbait.sourceforge.net it won't install directly onto the IA-1 and then run as expected. the image at http://www.flyingbuttmonkeys.com/mirrors/IA1/ named ia-linux-internal-16mb.img will, though.

this is the part where you have to type 'hdb single' in at the LILO: prompt. doing this will leave you at a root prompt, where you must remount the root filesystem as read-write, and then use the 'passwd' command to change the root password.

refer to previous messages from bballctaulbee and ranman regarding these activities...

Keith721,

There is now LILO prompt

its boots up to this point and then It says:

islack login: (Curser flashing waiting for a response)
Password: Waits for a response

It wants a login name & password

After i enter anything it says "Invalid password for 'unknown' on tt1

Did this image I got already have a password on it ??

the LILO: bootloader prompt comes up after the big red 'Compaq' logo screen, and before Linux begins booting. the username and password prompt come up after Linux has finished booting. using the 'single' option at the LILO: prompt logs you in as 'root' without the requirement of entering any password, at all.

so, remove power from your IA-1 (if Linux is running, the power key won't do it) wait a few seconds, and re-apply power. watch for the lovely red Compaq logo, and the very instant it disappears, hit the TAB key. this should show you the LILO: prompt, and the name of the Linux image to boot....
