Modifying the bin file directly

Can you tell me how I could mount the binary image file to /mnt/ as a loop device on a normal PC and linux?
I would like to mount it, make a few changes to the scripts inside and/or add some binary i386 compiled programs and then be able to write it to CF as you do a normal binary file.
The other choice is to write changes directly to the CF while it's running in the GCT. Can I do that? (not my first choice)
Other than having to type "pump" to get the ethernet working, everything is working good, thanks.
