Bootable PCMCIA CDROM? (For OS upgrade\clean install)

Is there such thing as a bootable PCMCIA CDROM?
Or do they all have the capability? Not that I mind making a bootdisk to be run on the docking station, but it'd speed things up than having to make the bootdisk and load the appropriate MSCDEX driver, etc.
Or is there an easier way to do clean install on a new HD?

I'm planning to do a clean install of Windows ME with 98lite (for extra stability and speed, not to mention smaller install, without the excess 'fat').

Pagman, I think all the silence to you question is because you do need the MSCDEX driver and perhaps a bit more in your AutoExec/ConfigSys to boot. If you check out the link I left in the Hard drive thread they give a screen shot of what appears to be the minimum.

Ah, thanks Groch.

I guess I should just pick up the cheapest pcmcia CDROM as I don't plan to use it much other than for CF-01's OS upgrade.

Or... maybe I should just copy the windows install CD to the CF-01's HD while it's networked (through a lan-shared CDROM), and go from there...

As for DOS here is the dilema..the CF-01 does not come with any pcmcia dos support. no card services or socket services. I tried to install card services from an Ibm Thinkpad 600 install diskette but it failed with hardware not found.

The software that comes with this sound card gives you Win95 software drivers for the sound card and scsi interface and some sound apps for Win95 that are not that great.

This will be an issue for anybody that is thinking of installing cd-rom software from DOS.

So I make a request for the first real hack of the CF-01. We need to get DOS pcmcia support on the CF-01. Anybody with an old laptop with card services would be a start.

I haven't received mine, but this guy uses a Panasonic KXL-808AN PCMCIA cdrom (ATAPI) on his CF-01 and shows the config\autoexec listing.

Also, there's a longer config\autoexec listing from this page detailing the use of KXL-808AN on an IBM thinkpad notebook.

The first link shows that he is using a point enabler for pcmcia access. If you have one for a specific model cd-rom that is the easiest way to go but there is no hot swap with a point enabler.

The other way to go is to use card and socket services but then you need the correct driver for the pcmcia controller. Standard C&SS comes with two or three different common controller drivers but I don't know if they will work. Luckily with the built in floppy testing is very easy.

So it looks like we can use the KXL-D20 + cd-rom under dos w/o any problem.

Anyway it is my guess. I just ordered KXL-D20 and bus_depot shipped my CF-01 today, so I can't test it now :)

It is still dependent on having either an intel clone pcmcia controller chip or a working card and socket services.

I haven't had a chance to try my collection of C&SS drivers but if I find something that works I will post asap.
