HELP, dead cf01
The darn thing won't do nothing

I have a cf01 running Win95 and no real extras. I bought a targus CD drive, keyboard and mouse combo for the dock, and loaded some software. every thing has worked well up to now (except the serial port doesn't seem to work, but that another post) until this morning. I loaded the palm desktop software onto it so that my Kyocera smartphone and the CF can sync. After loading all seemed well, until I rebooted. I was away from my desk and the keyboard when the "Win was not shut down properly...scandisk" warning came up. I let it run then it looked as though win was starting up fine then just about the time I am expecting to see my desktop I get this:

"A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0037F52 in VXD VPICD(01) +
00001ACA. The current application will be terminatated.
* Press any key to terminate the curent application.
* Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again to restart

Press any key to continue"

I have tried both options and I always end up looking at a blank screen except for the arrow(curser). The curser moves with the mouse only. Otherwise the CF is unresponsive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

Tony I'd say you have a conflict somewhere w/the Palm software. In any case you need to t-shoot your Win95 setup. I think I'd start booting in Safe mode (which should get you to the desktop) and then disable the Palm stuff and trying that first (i.e. whatever it may be "starting-up" either in Startup folder or Registry). Next you could try removing the software altogether, and last you could recover to an earlier working Registry.

But you have a software problem for sure.

Try to reinstall Pen Service 2.0, it may make the stylus work again.

How do I get to safe mode? It doesn't give me that option.

To start in safe mode you need a keyboard plugged in. Hit the F8 key while booting. To restore an old registry boot in DOS and run Scanreg.

Yeah sounds like you do have a keyboard connected. Note that F8 gives you a menu screen where in addition to Safe mode you can also select "Command Prompt" (DOS mode). The Registry Restore command is (I think)

scanreg /restore

But I wouldn't do that unless other options fail as, depending on when your last backup occurred, it "undoes" recent installs.

That did it.

I started in safe mode. it then prompted that the reg was bad and gave a restore from backup option. I did and all looks well.

Thanks for the help.
