I found it when I searched "KXL-D20" in Google or something, so I assumed that it was some sort of co-branded equivalent of the D20. (And like the D20, it appears to be an add-on card for connecting a CD-ROM drive.) But I must admit that I don't actually see a reference to the KXL-D20 on the page, so I don't know why it came up from that search. Could be an equivalent, or just a mistake, I don't know. It was shipped 2 day UPS air for the 16.95 shipping. The Panasonic box was ripped a little bit so I figured it was used. But when I opened it up I was IMPRESSED!!!!! This thing was brand spanking new. It comes with speakers, mic cables and pcmcia card, it even has 2 AA batteries. I also was pleasently suprised to have an an external SCSI connector. Great for Jazz or SCSI zip or any scsi CD-ROM. That was a freebie!!!! Guys having this big dongle comming out does make it a little awkward for portability but it will rock in the docking station. I am going to hook it up to my pc subwoofer system. These probably wont last long so I say "GO FOR IT!!!!" I will let you know when I have it hooked up and how it sounds. 04-18-2001 10:21:11

The website quoted $17 but they gave me $10 over the phone. (Admittedly I am only 100 miles from them.) Incidentally, it seems this is a closeout deal that we missed the best part of. Originally over $300 retail; comes up for $15 range at several online sites but they're all sold out. I guess Superbuys still has them due to their asking $50 when everyone else wanted $15. But they have the last laugh, because now that the $15 ones are gone they'll get their $50 price after all. Admittedly $50 sure beats $300, and still seems quite reasonable if not an absolute steal like $15 would have been... Regarding the mention of removeable storage options, I'm thinking of using a $10 PCMCIA-to-CompactFlash adapter with a 64 or 128mB CF card (in conjunction with USB card readers on my home and work PC's). Very impressed with the speakers included. Better sound than an ePod and it is stereo As for DOS here is the dilema..the CF-01 does not come with any pcmcia dos support. no card services or socket services. I tried to install card services from an Ibm Thinkpad 600 install diskette but it failed with hardware not found. The software that comes with this sound card gives you Win95 software drivers for the sound card and scsi interface and some sound apps for Win95 that are not that great. This will be an issue for anybody that is thinking of installing cd-rom software from DOS. So I make a request for the first real hack of the CF-01. We need to get DOS pcmcia support on the CF-01. As far as sound in dos there is only one pcmcia sound card that will support dos games and that is the ibm one. The problem is that pcmcia doesn't support dma which is needed for sound in dos games. The ibm sound card somehow emulated dma in such a way as to be able to claim sound blaster 16 compatibility in dos games, and it is the only one that ever managed this. I went through this quite a few years ago and every sound card available at the time was tried and only the ibm worked. Also, there are two different ibm sound cards (options by IBM), I have to check and see which one worked and only one of the two worked for sound in dos games. PeteB 04-18-2001 18:56:38

This isn't a bad thing, but it does rule out PCMCIA cards because the PCMCIA standard does not support DMA, a requirement for true SoundBlaster emulation. The cards that claim to be Sound-Blaster compatible accomplish this through a device driver emulating the DMA functionality. This has the effects of sucking up processor time, requiring some memory, and restricting you to DOS and whatever other operating systems the vendor supplied drivers for. The processor use of DMA-emulating software can be vicious, and often drags down performance of games substantially. (There's a reason companies add DMA chips to their hardware for other standards.) The one card that supposedly gets around the DMA problem is the IBM 3D Sound Card. It sells for $299, and uses a combination of hardware and software to get around the DMA problem. Of course, this isn't substantially different on the face of it from what other cards do, but the rumour is that this one works better. It does use their MWave DSP, and is reported to come with 6MB of samples as well as supporting general MIDI and being Sound Blaster-compatible. The IBM Part Number is: 08H4188. I don't have this card, but details of its specs are on the IBM WWW site at http://www.pc.ibm.com/options/g2214458.html. The Panasonic sound card uses the same chip as the Fujitsu which is the ESS1688. Here is what they said about it. "2.7 Fujitsu PCMCIA sound card This is a new 16-bit PCMCIA sound card, based on the ESS1688 chipset. It has Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 support. It supports MIDI only in DOS (no digitized sound). Under Win95, native games are alright but DOS games have no sound (no MID nor WAVE). Guess it's fine if you don't need digitized sound for games under dos." Driver Problems with IBM 3D Sound Card (modified 0 times) Jon_Acheson Profile I just got the IBM card, since I wasn't having any luck turning up the Panasonic. (I bought it for $60 plus shipping from http://www.computerslane.com and service was good. The card appeared to be NIB.) I've run into problems getting it to run, though. There aren't any Win95 drivers for the card, and the DOS and Win3.1 drivers that come with the card don't recognize Win95's Card and Socket services, so they won't install. Win95 sees the card, but doesn't have any drivers for it, and doesn't see any drivers on the Win3.1 floppies. I'm looking into how to get around this. IBM 3D Soundcard (modified 0 times) Jon_Acheson Profile Groch, yes, I've been to that page, and as far as I can tell, those are drivers for an earlier IBM sound card. In any case, they don't work. The problem is that 95 never recognizes the card properly, and it can't find drivers for the card in the file provided on that page, either. Apparently, this card was orphaned when 95 came out, because all laptops were required to have sound in order to be certified for 95. Thus, no need for add-on cards for machines running Windows 95. That's probably why IBM never released Win95 drivers for it. What I have been able to find out is that if you install Win 3.1, then install the 3.1 drivers and upgrade to 95, everything is supposed to keep working, though you won't have DirectX support. Does this sound like a Good Idea, or a Bad Idea? I have Windows 3.1 and a Win95 upgrade CD, but I have deep reservations about trying to get PCMCIA support going under 3.1. If it's not in the standard diskettes, I'm going to have a heck of a time finding the card and socket services software for Windows 3.1 after all this time... Is all the specialized software available from Panasonic's website, or would I lose important software doing a reinstall? Jon 05-20-2001 20:01:59

I downloaded the drivers from the page Groch had linked and ignored the instructions. I pointed windows(95) to the downloaded folder and let it install the drivers. It worked perfectly the 1st try. Also I upgraded to Win98 and it's still working perfectly. I talked to the guy on E-bay about a group purchase on the Panosonic's and he seemed uninterested and gave me a price higher than what they where going for. No-one has been bidding on his lately so you can probably get one for the 1st bid price of like $48. I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken ;) 06-11-2001 18:08:09

You got the IBM card to work? (modified 0 times) Jon_Acheson Profile Stoney49, That's really odd, I did the exact same thing and Windows couldn't see the driver. I know there were two different IBM PCMCIA sound cards: maybe I got the wrong one? I've since bought an EXP sound card off Ebay and that one works perfectly, plus it comes with a handy mini-speaker on the dongle.
