I have been using the Opera web browser on my desktop and find it to be extremely fast as well as non-bloat ware ala MS IE 5.5

I should get my CFs later this week but I suggest you give Opera a try, only a 9M download and extremely stable.

Opera is great. I use it as my main browser. Opera almost never crashes or hangs my machine. However, you still need to keep IE of Netscape around for those sites/pages which don't display properly in Opera. This is a small annoyance compared to the frequent crashes of Netscape & IE.

I noticed that someone else asked about where to download Opera so here is the link:

ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/english/ow32enen511j.exe

Folks-
DON'T waste your time with IE 4.0 or 5.5 on the CF-01 - Opera 5.11 (which is a free download and is only 3.0mb installed if you already have java script (it's in the 3.0 that comes with the CF-10) ROCKS! It's faster than 5.0 on my 166MHz laptop with much more ram and works flawlessly with the pen software (IE 4.0, 5.0 and 5.5 won't let you bring up the keyboard on the webpages!). Thanks guys for turning my onto Opera...I changed it on my other machines all over the house...

Hi,

What's the best way to get the Opera browser
loaded onto the CF-01. I don't have a LAN or wireless set up yet. And obviously I can't download it directly into the CF-01 without a browser set up. I assume I need to get
Opera onto floppies somehow to load.

Suggestions?

WinZip archive to multiple 1.44MB images.

Why not use the standard built-in IE to dowload Opera?

OK, there seem to be two problems:
Problem 1: No lan.
Solution?
pc-to-pc serial link
dialup lan

Problem 2: No browser for downloading Opera
Solution?
IE
ftp

Weird solutions:
1. parallel port CF card reader/writer
2. pcmcia flash memory (do they sell CF -> PCMCIA?)
For either of these, drivers will be loadable via floppy.

If I am missing something, apologies.

Thanks guys,

Sorry. I didn't realize that the unit came pre-configured with IE. That seems to be the easist way to DL Opera.

In terms of the winzip archive (spanning several disks), can I make an archive self-extracting or will I need WinZip installed also on the CF-01?

Thanks again,
Dickie

1. parallel port CF card reader/writer
2. pcmcia flash memory (do they sell CF -> PCMCIA?)

This is a great, if not particularly cheap, way to get a lot of removable storage onto your CF-01. If you buy a CF card reader for your PC, a CF card, and a PCMCIA-CF adapter for your CF-01, your can use the CF card as a tiny removable "zip drive" for transfering files back and forth between PC and CF-01. Yes, there are cheaper removable drives, but I like this option because it takes up zero space; I just keep it in the spare PCMCIA slot of my CF-01 (with my wireless network card in the other slot).

You can get a CF-PCMCIA adapter here for $6 plus shipping. Better yet, get this . It's a very good USB card reader that also includes a CF-PCMCIA adapter, so it includes everything you need for both the PC and the CF-01 (besides the CF card itself).

On second thought, and to answer my own question - the docking station has a parallel port - why not use a Zip drive to add programs or move files to th CF-01 - after transfering the zip drivers (which I'm sure can be downloaded from Iomega by the CF-01).

Question:
Using the included IE3, I keep getting javascript errors. Is there something I need to do to enable java? If I d/l Opera, will I need the larger Java-included version?
I assume with Opera 5 as with IE, I still will not be able to enter a URL directly into the URL box, but will have to use the File-open method?

PS - After about 1/2 hr of use, the CF-01 seems to get very hot - are others experiencing this too?

To reply to your P.S. -

Are you using any pcmcia devices? Like, say, a wireless card? I have found them to be a significant contributer to the heater effect (If so, enabling power saving for the card can make a difference

BD:

You only have to download the Non-Java version of Opera and it will use whatever version of Java is currently installed on your system. If you wanted the latest offical Java release download the full package.

You can enter the address directly in the URL area, just click the small blue arrow and that will launch you to whatever address you entered.

I downloaded this last night via my wireless connection. The features are not too bad but I was disappointed during the install to find out that there will be ads being flashed at me.

That is one thing I can't really stand. It's ok when using a download manager since I just minimize it anyway. The screen on my CF-01 is small enough, and web pages I visit already has ads flashing in front of me.

Is there an Opera version that does not have ads. Just wandering... It does have nice features...

Yes there is a version without ads, you get to download the free version so you have to suffer through them unless you are willing to pay for it.

Although this like any software can be registered without paying I suggest that you do pony up the $39. If we don't support companies like this we will be stuck with crap like IE and Outlook forever.

Yes, I noticed once I have went and saw there website. Of course seeing that the software was free I shouldn't really complain. It's just that I tried using Netzero before on my I-Opener and it takes up so much usable space. Now the CF-01 is even smaller.

But with the free Opera, I get to try out the software and if I like it, then I have a choice to buy it. Which I think is great. But now that I have broadband, a little bit of ad data doesn't really hurt.

Thanks again for this info.
