Well my parent own a Chinese restaurant and we are currently looking into computer automated order taker. Due to limit counter space, we would need flat screen monitor...

When I saw the CF-01, I thought what a great PC for that purpose. Now if I could just get the software to have it all work together...

Just to let you guys know what I am considering for this little toy!

A while ago I was part owner of a business that was doing computerized cash registers. At the the we were using touch screens and 386/486 DX-50 machines peer to peer all talking to one back office machine. Worked pretty well as at least 4 of the systems/restaurants are still using the same systems. The software was very customizable. You designed each screen and back office functions were pretty good. With the advent of established wireless standards the whole cash register business can take a new role. Currently I have a source for Epson 486 computers which were designed as cash registers. I am not in that business any more. Very small footprint and with multiple comm ports(for cash drawer & slip printer), PCMCIA slot, etc and backup battery.
The software used a printer dongle and it was about $500 a node at the time. Typically a restaurant would 1-2/more cash registers, 1-2/more no cashdrawer terminals and a number of attached and remote slip printers. Connecting and configuring the remote serial printers was a pain (better now maybe to use wireless ethernet connected parallel printers). Remote order taking would work but as I recall (at one time I also owned 5 restaurants originally started by my parents) most people that worked for me really abused and did not care of any restaurant equipment. In one restaurant I was rebuilding/and/or buying vacumn cleaners every couple of months. So a $400 order taking portable terminal will probably be dropped a few times and may even get wet a few times and do you think its worth investing in considering the abuse that will likely occur? You might consider maybe a refurbed $100 b/w terminal or maybe an older CE device running TS (which is smaller)....thought I would offer some comments...

Wow, didn't think I was gonna get a response. After I have posted the note, I felt kinda dumb.

I would appreciate any info you can provide. Mostly I'm looking for 2 terminals at the counter and maybe another one or two at some other stations. It's not a very big restaurant, and don't really need mobile ones to be dropped as the worker is kinda abusive.

I don't believe there's much people that are interested so if you like please email me.

Do you know if these software will support other languages such as Chinese?

Thanks again.
