Hi,

Sorry if this is already covered but I did search(honest). What in your experience is the safest way of upgrading to 98 given that I don't have a pcmcia cdrom but do have pcmcia network(+ lots of other computers on the network). I don't have win98 upgrade but do have original win98se diskette/cdrom.

Any ideas / suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Chris

First get your network card working in Win95
Then usinging another computer map a drive to it's CDROM.
Copy all the files in the Win98 directory to c:\i386
Get a Win98 boot floppy ready (make one if you have to) (on win98 computer type sys a:\)
Shutdown Win95 by Dropping to DOS
Copy the c:\windows©ommand\deltree.exe to c:\
Deltree all the directories EXECPT C:\i386
Del *.* c:\
REBOOT with CF-01 in docking station and Win98 bootdisk in floppy
at prompt cd to c:\i386
run setup
Thats it!!

You might want to get the program called 98Lite from www.98lite.net and use it to start your install with. Get it BEFORE you drop to dos in win95. Run the download, then run the exe and install it to your C:\i386 directory with your Win98 setup files. AFTER you complete al the rest of the steps, instead of running c:\i386\setup.exe run 98lite.exe. It will take you throught the rest.

I'm sorry for such a "newbie"-type question, but it's been such a long time since I've worked w/Win95, that I have to ask someone to summarize: what is different/better about Win98SE over Win95? Particularly in the context of the CF-01.

I do have a Win98SE CD, a network card, a PC Card CD-ROM drive, and also 98 lite, and am just itching to "upgrade", but in my currently (mentally exhausted) state the only, best reason that I can come-up with to do this is just so I don't have to confront differences in OS from one toy to the next (there are now some 4 PCs I use 98 on periodically).

Can someone help me decide to do this now (or not) before I start tweaking my new CF-01 w/other programs and gizmos. Many TIA!

I did go ahead and upgrade to Win98SE last night and it went pretty well, though I'm still sorting thru some "best driver" issues for my CF-01. Ultimately I decided to go w/98 over 95 for reasons simply of the taskbar convenience and a few other GUI tweaks, and the "System Information" utility which I believe is new w/98. In any case, I used 98lite "Chubby" and deselected most every Win98 option therein, including IE (using Opera instead). Even with the 24Meg RAM in the CF-01 it works just great, no problems. I've decided 98lite is an essential tool for these gizmos, if you're into Win98 (yeah I know this is a Linux board).
