Screen Quality / Refresh

To anyone lucky enough to have a cf-01!

What is the screen like?

Is the processor fast enough to play video?
avi/ Mpeg1 or 2 at which resolutions? ( I don't mind lower res/smaller window as long as its possible)

Is the processor fast enough to use Terminal Services or VNC/tridiavnc from a server with good refresh?

I guess that someone would have tried this, as it's what lots of epod users run.

I would like to use it to web browse, and remote control other machines... Is the cf-01 the answer?

Thanks in advance

The screen is ok. The refresh is not that good, its a dual scan. I haven't tried any video on it, but I have a feeling that it wouldn't work (it can't even play mp3's right now) I'm guessing that it would be plenty to run terminal server or VNC. If you just want simple web browsing and VNC, this is great machine

What exactly is a "Dual Scan"?

For videos, you might try Smacker compression. Quality and resolution are decent and they play on real slow, old hardware. You caould probably get 240x180x15 fps. Maybe even 320x240x15fps. Smacker uses a sophisticated color reduction technique to reduce to 256 colors. Files are small too. It is used in Jedi Knight and StarCraft among other games. Info at www.radgametools.com

Networking, TS, PC Anywhere, Surfing all work well with Win95. Would not recommend going to Win98 until memory size is at least 40 megs and maybe overclocking. Battery power gives me about 2 hours with Bronze WaveLan wireless card.

Dual Scan is the type of LCD panel the CF uses. Rather than go into a long drawn out description I have located a tutorial on LCD types.

I read and looked up some more info.
Dual Scan divides the screen in two sections and refreshes them simultaneously to allow faster refrseh rates.

I am still not quite clear on why Dual Scan is undesirable though...

The main reason that dual scan is not as good as TFT because the DSTN has a longer persistence and lower refresh rate.

If you play high frame rate video on a DSTN it tends to blur together as well as the mouse pointer looks like it has the tails option turned on.

On the plus side DSTN is much better on power consumption.

Actually it is not the dual scan that is the problem it is that every dual scan screen I have ever seen is also a passive matrix screen. This means that there is one transitor per row and column which limits the signal strength and speed. TFT (Thin Film Transitor) screens are also often refered to as active matrix screens. This means that each pixel has its own transitor controlling it. This allows for much faster switching speeds as well as higher drive resulting in fast screen updates and higher contrast.

The reason that all Dual Scan LCDs are passive matrix is because active matrix has no need for dual scan.

I was avoiding the in-depth technical description and thought I would just lay out the facts. But if you want the technical aspects of a DSTN, which is Double Super-Twisted Nematic, I am sure we can take this off line.
