Turn Off Backlight?

Have any of you noticed that when the screen is in powersave mode the backlight is still on? Is there a way to get the screen to turn off after a time period? I have tried the powersave features of both Screensave and BIOS. The backlight remains on!! I didn't try this in 95 did it work? I am using 98 now. For the sake of CF-01 lifetime we need to figure this one out.

Come on guys...this is an important problem. Backlights would be the first thing to go bad on these units.

Just trying to keep this post on top.
Someone really needs to look at this on a system pre-98 wipe. DOES THE BACKLIGHT TURN OFF in monitor powersave mode?

Do you guys realize that the backlights are usually the first hardward failure in laptop devices? So this is important when it comes to extending the life of your CF-01

Cheaha, I noticed the same thing. I am relatively sure the backlight is off on the original windows 95. This must be some sort of device driver issue. Let's see if anyone comes up with a solution.

I think I got it figured out.

Replace the "Improved" windows 98 Chips and Technology video driver with the original one dated 1996 from the Panasonic Video drivers disk. You have to choose it cause windows likes the new one better. Now the Hibernation shuts the backlight down like it used to.

You mention hibernation (memory copied to disk and total power off), do you have hibernation working under win98? If so what filesystem did you put on the hard drive FAT16 or FAT32. Was this just an upgrade of the original win95 disk and if so is it FAT16? Just trying to find a few answers on my hibernation problem in win98.

It was a clean install but I did not reformat in FAT 32, left it in 16. I just used the utilities file that is posted on the Panasonic web site. If I remember correctly you add it as a windows component. After doing it the "Cannot Hibernate" message at boot up is gone, and it sleeps just fine. I think all of the functionality is now where it should be, though I don't notice any real change, except slower boot up, from WIN95

Thanks you just confirmed the last problem I had. The utilities work fine under win98 and a FAT32 partition, creating the hiber.dat and hiber.bin files, but the bios still says that it cannot hibernate. Also if you try to hibernate there are a couple of flashes and you are back to the desktop. I guess I will reinstall on a FAT16 partition.

Noticed that Backlight remains on (WIN98) with Scitech drivers whereas with WIN95 and Scitech drivers it went off.

Tried loading the old Chips and Technologies video adapter ( 1996 ) from CF-01 utilities disk, but the backlight still stays on when the CF-01 drops into sleep/hibernation mode. I'm running Win98 Second Edition on my CF-01, FAT16 file system. What else do I need to do to get the backlight to turn off in hibernation mode?

Do any of the CF-01 user's out there know how to solve the problem with the backlight staying on in powersave/hibernation/sleep mode on a CF-01 running Windows 98SE ? Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Doug, Sorry no one answered you yet, but I am not sure we will have the answer you want. So far as I can tell there are only 3 necessary components to making the hibernation work in Win 98.
1. Use a Fat 16 file system (which you have done)
2. Download and install the Hibernation Utilitie from the Panasonic web site. Installation involves going to the Windows Components part of the Add/Change programs control panel, then pointing it towards the unzipped file. This will make the "cannot hibernate" message dissappear on boot up. You probably have to open the Panasonic system control panel that this installs and enable hibernation after that.
3. Download and install the Panasonic video driver, making sure to force it to load the '96 file. Sounds like you have done that.
If you have done all of these steps and it does not work then I am out of ideas and perhaps someone else can help. Let us know if you figure it out.

Groch,
Thanks for the assistance. Have tried steps 1 and 3, but not 2. I haven't noticed a "cannot hibernate" error when booting up, but I will check this as soon as I get home this evening. The machine does seem to drop into hibernation mode alright. Drops to a blank screen, cursor flashing in upper left corner, responds when you touch the screen with the stylus. I have been wondering if perhaps it's really not in "hibernation mode" at all, but just in stand-by. I seem to remember that when I was running with the original Win95 configuration on the machine, a message box about restoring the desktop from a file would appear when I "re-awakened" from hibernation mode. I did some hunting on Panasonic's web site last night, but couldn't locate the Hibernation Utility on that site...do you have a URL where I can find it, or is it on the CF-01 utilities disk ?

Thanks again !

What you are describing is not hibernation, it is just a standby mode that is to save power. There are basically three levels of power
saving. Standby that turns off the screen and after a little while the HD as well. Suspend which turns off everything except the power to maintain the RAM contents. Hibernation that copies the RAM contents to a file on the HD and then totally shuts off power. The last, hibernation, requires the setup program from panasonic to create the two files that are used to store the RAM contents. If you are still using the original disk and partition, even if you upgraded to win98, the files are still there and you will not get the message at boot that hibernation is unavailable. If you add more RAM or reformat the HD or delete the two hiber.* files it will start saying that again and you will need to run the setup utility under windows to recreate the files. Also if you do move to a new HD or repartition you need a FAT16 partition as the first (usually) partition for these files to reside if you want to be able to hibernate.

On my CF-01 running win98se new install with 98lite chubby mode on a FAT16 partition I have noticed that the standby mode does not turn off the backlight correctly, the other two modes do. Since there are issues with the memory upograde and video drivers I have not tried the original video driver, I am currently using the Chips and Technologies Super VGA driver that is part of win98se set at 256 colors. When I get a chance I am going to try the SciTech driver again to see if I can get 16 bit color but it also has the problem of not turning off the backlight as I understand it.

Thought I'd give it another shot. I have confirmed that my Win98SE FAT16 CF-01 is not going into hibernate mode at all. It does drop into stand-by mode, and the backlight stays on. I have run the Power Management utility, selected "Enable Hibernation", set the Hibernation time-out to 5 minutes, stand-by time out to 3 minutes. Still no go. I downloaded the utilities from this board, but they appear to be the same versions of the Panasonic CF-01 utilities currently installed on the unit. Is there some newer/different version of the utilities, or is there some trick to running the power management utility so that the CF-01 will hibernate ?

Mine, same setup, hibernates fine. What does yours do when you pick the hibernate pad on the left of the screen (moon with M)? I am not positive but I think mine has gone from suspend to hibernate. Make sure that the settings apply when on AC, I think they may only be while under battery power.

Current setup is: Mem upgrade to 40 Megs HD to 5.1 Gigs.
SCITECH Video driver and Windows 98 SE. Mine will suspend fine but will not Hibernate or shut off display using power saving features. Plugging in my old HD with Windows 95 using SCITECH driver and 40 megs Hibernate & Display shutting off works well. I ran a MS Windows Power features application to help solve power saving mode problems and it doesn't indicate any problems....right now if I try to manually shut off screen to test it just blanks but Backlight remains on...

My CF-01 drops to hibernate mode just fine when the "moon with M" icon is selected from the unit's control panel. I checked the Programs/Utility/System Setup/Power Management dialog box, and confirmed that the "Enable Battery/AC" option was selected. I assume this setting should allow the unit to go into hibernate mode whether running off the battery or AC power.

Most CF-01er's posting here appear to have been able to resolve the hibernation glitch. Real bugger this one...I may be forced into wiping the unit clean (again) and re-installing the original Win95 config just so I can get the thing to hibernate properly. Wish there were another way, especially since I finally got DCOM set up and working on the CF-01 with Win98SE. I've tried all the recommended fixes from this/other BBS', and nothing seems to affect the hibernate behavior. No matter what hibernate time-out settings I use, the thing just drops into stand-by ( cursor flashing in upper left hand corner of blank screen, power on, backlight on ) when the stand-by timeout is reached, and stays in that state indefinitely.

Kinda reminds me of that scene in "Last of The Mohicans", where Daniel Day Lewis says "No matter what occurs, stay alive !......"

P.S. : Last night, just for kicks, I decided to disable stand-by altogether, and left hibernate enabled with a 5 minute timeout. After 5 minutes nothing happened, but after about 20 minutes, the unit went into it's stand-by mode ! I am thoroughly confused....
I also noticed that there is another Windows Power Management utility in Settings/Control Panel. Wondered if the settings here ( e.g., Laptop/Desktop/Always on ) might interfere with the Panasonic System Utilities power management settings (?)...anyone got any ideas on this?

....I will never surrender

I am not as concerned about Hibernate (with save to HD feature) ...but more concerned with backlight staying on. I am content with suspend as it works correctly. Has anyone created a Fat 16 partition for just tge hibernate mode and does it work?
