Any ideas for a portable case?

Stinger2 again,

My CF-01 has been out on the road with me lately. I know we are all going to need something to protect the screen and the rest of the unit. Any ideas? Didn't some people get special cases made? I would pay to get a custom case with a flip-top to operate the unit while still in the case.

Send ideas one and all!

I've got one that will blow your mind off!
http://stores.yahoo.com/goincase/moyadeluxe.html
I got one last week and I have got to say that this is the killer of all cases. Its a little pricy but it will also fit a future tablet pc or small laptop such as HP Omnibook 500 or a Sony picture book. It fits the CF-01 perfectly with rooms to spare and I finally decided to get it (even though that its a little pricy ~$70) because that I can think of future applications for it. If you are not planning on getting a super slim laptop, you can get a smaller size which is a little cheaper. But I have to say that this is one of the best designed bag with TOP quality. I also have another one made by them for laptop and it is really outrageous. The quality can't be beat.
Love the extra padding that put my mind in ease and not worry about something that is going to break my delicate equitments inside.

Not bad. Interesting concept, but I think I a big enough geek already without having a fanny-bag full of silicon...

I would like something more stealthy as the Caselogic bag I am re-using from my ePods keeps getting referred to as my Man-Purse.

Sorry just checked the specs of the above case and it looks to miss the mark a bit for the CF-01.

But I found another great one... too bad for the price.

I looked through the Caselogic site and found this one that seems to be about the right size.

I have a case for a Panasonic DVD-L10D portable DVD player, and the CF-01 fits very nicely inside, albeit vertically. It has an outer flap, two zippered compartments, a carry handle, a shoulder strap, heavily padded, well-built, says "Panasonic" on the outside (tho with "DVD"). I think I paid $50 or more for it from Hammacher Schlemmer, on the website below it is only $34.95:

http://www.prodcat.panasonic.com/shop/templates/noimage_template.asp?ModelId=8744&show_all=false&product_exists=True&active=1

This would work great if you intend to carry it by itself, or with a number of accessories--I'd prefer a simple slipcover of some sort so I could put it into my briefcase...

Laserfan, there is a picture of the Case Here: http://www.consumerdirectonline.com/dycc10.htm . Is that the one you have, looks like it might work well. This price is a couple of bucks cheaper but I do not know how the shipping compares.

Meads Five Star Strikes again! I found a slick case option for $15 with some history to it. If you followed Epods you might remember Meads made a notebook folio that worked great as an Epods easel/case. Turns out they make another model works even better for the CF-01. Its zippered, fits like a glove, and has a hidden expanding pocket that holds the AC adaptor.

The model 50062 Five Star Xpanz School day planner is a 3 ring binder case made of nylon fabric. If you go to Meadweb.com and search for 50062 you will see it, but it the one I have looks more industrial as it has a mesh outer pocket. You have to remove the 3 ring binder which is riveted in place. I just pulled but there is probably a more elegant way. Put a couple strips of velcro on the back of the CF-01 to hold it in,and it fits perfectly in the inner zippered compartment. You do not have to remove the handle, but it sits flatter if you do. The outer compartment holds a couple of CDs in the collapsed mode, but a zipper lets it expand to where it holds the AC adaptor just fine. A third outside pocket could hold PC cards or the removed handle.

I like cases that are as small as possible, still offer protection, and let you use the unit in the case. This one fits the bill, and in black looks pretty nice. Next time your near an Office Depot you check it out.

If you want to see how well a notebook binder can work as a CF-01 case I have posted some pictures of it here http://www.users.qwest.net/~groch/Cf01case.htm . If anyone wants to send me some shots of other case or keyboard options for the CF-01 I will be happy to put them up to.

Groch-
Great recommendation on the Mead case (nice page, too). If fits like a glove. I bought velcro, but I'm not sure I'll even use it. The inside deep pocket can fit many pcmcia cards. And the expansion zipper allows you to fit a lot in the outside pocket. Great find and thanks!

The Mead case looks slick! I am going to look for one myself.

It does appear from your photos Groch that cards might scratch the screen--either I'd add a piece of foam to the face of the screen, or maybe the CF-01 can be turned-around so it's face-down.

Anyway, I'm gonna take a look; thanks.

Nice find Groch. Looks perfect size. I'll have to find an Office Depot and pick up a couple this weekend.

My local Walmart has these cases for only $9.96. They have several colors blue and black and some with a mesh see thru pocket in the front. They work very nicely just need to come up with a handle or carrying strap and we got a winner here.

Thanks for the idea on the Mead case. I picked one up at Walmart for 10 bucks tonight. I am not crazy about velcro, so I removed the rubber handle from the CF-01 and used the same screws to attach the Mead case to the back of the unit (I used a nail set heated on the stove to melt the holes for the screws).

The added benefit is that the case does not have to be taken off to put the unit into the docking station - just slip the unit into the dock while holding the case away from the back. The back stand of the dock ends up sandwiched between the case and the CF-01. The only drawback is that you just won't be able to lean the CF-01 back to the low angle while in the dock.

I did not attempt to screw the handle on the outside of the Mead case though, the screws don't appear long enough to go through the handle and case together. Maybe I will look for some different screws if I feel I really need a handle - right now it feels about perfect, just like holding on to a book!

My WM does not carry MEAD either but I found them at Office Depot and made my case last night. Using a crude variation of the heated-nailset method, I poked my mounting holes with a nail heated up with my trusty prpane torch. It looks and works great, thanks for all the ideas guys! I am wondering what I should do with the "extra" hole where the binder was monted. Has anyone sucessfully used them for a handle or shoulder strap? Thanks again.

If you can't find it at a local store I found a place online selling a slight variation.
Goto http://www.usahardware.com and do a search for Mead or Xpanz and you'll find this
"MEAD 5 STAR XPANZ NTBK FOLIO, Model 33046" for $13.09.

At the mead site (http://www.mead.com) you'll see two slight variations of what looks like the same product. Model 33046 is available online for $13.09 at usahardware.com. The model Groch found is 50062. It looks like they're the same size but one with a spiral notebook and the other with a calendar /daily planner.

According to the Meads site the 3046 model is a lot bigger (search for Xpanz and they all show up with dimensions). Full notebook size. The Walmart here had quite a few of the right ones.

Hey folks,

I found some alternative cases. Some of the small camcorder/digital camera cases could be the right size and are well padded. Also others on the BBS have mentioned Nintendo/Game console cases as possibilities. I like the MEAD 50062. I have it attached to my CF-01 and it is perfect. As for the extra holes, I found some spare strap retainers from a Galco shoulder holster and they screw into those holes after slightly enlarging and fusing the fabric with the hot nail trick. The Galco hardware is black screws with threaded brass bases(inside the case) and blends nicely with the case. I am pondering whether to try attaching a hand or shoulder strap to them. Any additinal suggestions or info. is greatly appreciated.

I already bought a couple of the Mead cases that Groch found. They fit perfect and they were only $10 at WalMart. I found another case today at Sam's, also for $10. I couldn't resist and picked up a couple of those as well. The CF-01 with the Linksys wireless pcmcia card still in it fits in the case. The case is padded.
The package is called the CaseLogic Value Pack (VP1) and contains a CD player case http://www.casedirect.com/images/p67b.JPG
a CD wallet (24 cd's) http://www.casedirect.com/images/p33.JPG
and 4 AA batteries. all for $10!
The carry case has a carry strap and inside the bag is an extension for the strap so you can carry it on your shoulder.
The CD Player case looks like Caselogic DM 2 and the CD Wallet looks like Caselogic CDW 24.

FYI, I've been looking for a case and found the following. Flexable Flat Pack Student Planner by Day Runner ( part # 311-6286 ). It was at the local Big Lots for $3.99. Made of Neoprene with a removable ( slide Out ) three ring binder and lots of built in pockets for CF, PCMCIA, Business cards etc. It also uses one of the big tooth zippers for closure, they don't foul as bad as the small ones. They had several colors from Pink to grey and Black. It is padded enough to carry in the briefcase or in the hand. I plan to velcro the CF-01 to the inside back or burn a couple of holes for the hand strap screws and use it as my day planner. You can see it at the following link,, http://www.dayrunner.com/org_planners/color_description.asp?page=search&CAT=PS&SUB=&pf_id=311%2D6286%2Dblack,, and all the colors at,,http://www.dayrunner.com/search/index.asp?type=qby&search=startover&show=yes&form=yes&CAT=PS&SUB=

PS: I use window decal material for screen protection, real inexpensive at the office supply stores.

Groch, that Mead case looks like just the ticket. I think I'll pick one up myself.

Incidentally, if anyone is concerned about added protection for the screen while traveling, I discovered that a small Priority Mail box (provided free at the Post Office for mailing packages) happens to be precisely the right size for a CF-01; the CF-01 fits inside it like a glove. I just cut off the top flap so it slides in and out. I have a soft case for light-duty use, but if I will be putting the CF-01 in a carry-on bag or somewhere where I am concerned about a little extra protection, I slip it into the Priority Mail box first, then slip that into the soft case. The combination gives it sort of a "hard case" effect without any extra size/weight. (And besides, the price is right. )

The markings on the box I have are 0-1096-SMALL, followed by MARCH 2001.
