Windows CE on the CF-01??
Is this possible??

Instead of converting to a fairly slow Windows 98 machine, would it be possible to convert the CF-01 to a high charged CE (3.0? 2.0?)?? Maybe this is a stupid idea but I thought I would ask.

This subject comes up occasionally, but I believe:
1. The software is not available such that you can load it in the first place
2. WinCE doesn't have the drivers you'd want/need for the hardware platform & accs
3. There aren't the variety of programs to run on it as other OSes
4. No one has ever accused CE of being "fast" that I know of

I'd wondered this myself at one point and the above is what I *think* I've learned since finding this board some months ago.

95 is not bad. 98 is really not any better for what you can do with a CF-01. The speed isn't bad with 95 either. I am kind of puzzled why everyone is so eager to have 98. What's the advantage?

On the other hand, CE is relatively crap. 95 is without question better than CE. Even if it was possible, you would not want it anyway. Instead of going to a slow 98 machine, why not stick with a mediocre 95 machine? Out of the three PCs in my house, my 95 machine is (ironically) my most stable.

The real thing you may want is Linux. It has been said it works on these, but nobody is there yet...

I'm planning to use an I-A with touchscreen for a home automation controller (using a web interface). Seeing as I'm going to be replacing my TV remote with it, it's pretty important that it have the ability to turn on instantly. Isn't this an advantage to using Win CE over a more robust OS? Does Linux come on instantly (as with a PDA)? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Well Win98 and WinME have sleep modes which provide an almost "instant-on" capability, provided the motherboard has Adanced Power Management features !

Well, considering there is no native-built CE OS for this type hardware, it seems you would have to emulate it anyway. CE was not meant for full PCs (which a CF-01 more or less is). CE usually is in some type of ROM which is why it has instant on. A CF-01 is like a laptop or PC, it is a totally different setup. However, like Yellow1 says, there are various sleep modes. Considering the power requirements though, a device like an ePods might be more suited if it can be made to work. It's got CE and 6 hour batt life. anyway...

Thanks for the input. I've got a desktop and laptop both running Win 98. The hibernation/sleep functions take a while to re-start up (more than 30 seconds). Too long to wait to turn down the TV volume or change a channel. Obviously I could just leave a machine on 24-7, but I'm not interested in the energy costs and a whirring fan on all the time will drive me nuts. I really need something like a color PDA with a bigger screen than a Palm Pilot, and which would be able to browse via a wireless network card. Hopefully by the time I get this all rolling (a year?), I'll have more options out there. I was just wondering if Linux has a similar bootup process to Windows.

i would have to say for that function to look at the sony remote controls, especially the Sony RM-AV2100 with programmable buttons and macro functionality. Here are some reviews on it: http://www.epinions.com/elec-Video-Remotecontrols-All-Sony_RM-AV2100

I can only add that my CF-01 restores from standby in only a second or two-it's virtually instant-on. And no fan, and the only noticeable evidence that the HD is spinning is when it STOPS i.e. there's an audible "clunk" when it spins down.

But I wouldn't necessarily argue for using this in your application. While I do imagine I will be using it on the sofa (w/my wireless PC card) more often it will travel with me when I go on business trips...
