RAM Upgrade, Yay or Nay ?

Been following the threads and it seems the RAM upgrade issues have been resolved. Can everyone who has upgraded confirm this in this thread and maybe provide some resources to find the memory upgrade for purchase. Anyone thinking bulk discount purchase? If all the issues have been worked out I'd imagine there'd be some interested in upgrading with all the units distributed up to this point.

Ok I am currently running a 40M machine under win98se installed with 98lite chubby mode and it works perfectly. The only two real issues are te video and hibernation and the latter is not a memory issue.

First off with the video I have found that you can use the Chips and Technologies Super VGA driver that is part of win98se to get up to 256 colors with the memory upgrade with no problems. Pete found that by using the SciTech Video Doctor driver you can get 16 bit color working but I am still working on that one as the driver builder blew up on me repeatedly. Right now I am happy with my 256 colors.

Second the issue with hibernation is not a memory issue at all. It is just a requirement that the first partition be a fat16 partition. This may be an issue for linus installs but if you created a fat16 partition of a little more than 40M you should be ok. If you are using win9x just be sure and make the first partition fat16.

I posted where I found my memory on the CF-01 Memory thread. I don't have the information handy here now but you can check that thred for details. Total with shipping and insurance was $46.99 for the 32M upgrade I listed in the above thread, I know since I just ordered another one for my Ricoh G-1200s. I don't have any idea if they would do a bulk discount, someone would have to contact them directly.

Ram Upgrade, I vote maybe. 40 megs does seem to speed things up a bit, but I have not been able to get more than 256 colors despite messing with Scitech. The memory source most of us are using is here: http://www.coastmemory.com/category.asp?pagetoview=3&catid=11&subcatid=11 . They were real quick. The install went easy as long as you are careful which screw goes back where, I don't think any two were the same length or thread.
You will get a lot of blue screens until you switch to the Super VGA Chips and Technology driver that tcbordp mentions. Hibernation works fine, no other problems. However, I don't think a bit more speed for fewer colors is a good trade. Scitech won't even load for me. Pete, if you have some sage advice we could use it.

Groch:

I am glad to see it wasn't just me doing something wrong with the scitech driver. It kept blowing up or giving various errors and then reverting to the windows driver, got to be very annoying.

I know what you mean about the screws too. I have 20 or moer various small computers and I have never seen one use so many different screws to hold the back on. Related to that, is it the long self tapping screw that goes in the middle to hold in the HD or the short one? I missed the difference when I took it apart once and now I am not sure which is which.

tcbordp,

It is the long self-tapping screw which holds the hard drive in. The cf-01 is unique in that respect, each screw has its own length, thread and proper place to go.

CF-01 works for 40MB, I listed the procedure in
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=PanasonicCF01&Post=71&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0
Conclusions:
1. you can add $40 LGEN0323F1 32MB Dimm from Coast and replace the 16MB Dimm.
2. the windows display drivers only work for 256 color.
3. use SciTech Display Doctor to get 16-bit colors.
4. so far no other problem found.
