IE 5.5 on CF-01

The CF-01 comes with IE 4.0, or whatever it is that Win95 used. I immediately loaded 5.5 onto mine. I then discovered that the icon that activates the pop-up screen for keyboard entry does not appear in dialog boxes where I'm supposed to type in data on web pages. Without this, the only way I can enter the data (using stock pop-up keyboard) is to open notepad, enter it there, and then copy and paste it into the dialog box - a pain in the neck. (Another solution is to use PenOffice, the Win95 version of Calligrapher, to write in the data, but unfortunately PenOffice lacks the pop-up keyboard that Calligrapher has, so it's write-in only.) I've been told by another user that this was not the case with the preloaded IE 4.0 that I so quickly got rid of. I upgraded to 5.5 so quickly that I can neither confirm nor deny this. I have no doubt that a workaround will be quickly discovered, but since many have not yet received their units, I thought I'd at least warn you before you upgrade the IE on your unit.

I believe the version that was pre-installed was IE v3.0 but like bus_depot I quickly upgraded. I installed IE 4.01 SP2 which I also elected to install the shell update. For those of you who do not know what that is. Windows 95 does not come with active desktop or the quick launch toolbar, these are some of the features of shell update. I turn off active desktop (uses too much resources..SLOW) but I can not live without the quick launch toolbar. I then updated to IE 5.5 sp1 which I think runs like a dog on this machine. So I ended up going back to IE 4.01 SP2.

I assume what bus_depot meant was that by upgrading to IE 5.5 he was not getting the icon (I call it the A icon) which allows you to click on it and get the popup keyboard to type in urls of web pages) Bus_depot please clarify this to me when you get a chance. By going from IE 4.01 SP2 to IE 5.5 you will get the A icon so you will be able to get the popup keyboard to type in urls. Hope this helps.

With 5.5, I am getting the "A" icon at the top of the screen where you are supposed to enter a URL, but it does not seem to recognize the "enter" command after I type in the URL. So the address displays in the box just fine but the page never loads. I sidestepped this by going to FILE - OPEN and typing the URL in there instead; using exactly the same steps in that box, the "enter" command is accepted and the page loads.

But on pages where there is a dialog box somewhere in the BODY of the page - such as to type in your name, password, etc. - no "A" icon is there at all. This requires me to open Notepad, enter the data there, copy, and paste, for want of a better fix. (Or use PenOFfice and write it in.)

I just got my CF-01 yesterday -- thanks, Bus_Depot! I loaded IE 5.01 on the system.

The lack of the Pen Services "A" icon showing up in IE 5.5 search/form boxes appears to be a bug specific to IE 5.

I loaded up Opera 5.1 (the free one with the banner ads) and the "A" icon shows up in all of the boxes, including search/form boxes.

For that reason, Opera 5.1 is currently more CF-01 pen friendly than IE 5.5.

Since this is a x586 cpu I would go with an Opera browser. Opera is very fast on the slower machines when with IE it tends to crawl. You might want to check that avenue out.

Opera is indeed a free download.

Go to:

I don't know if the CF-01's pen has a button for right click, but if you can right click on the text entry field it should bring up a context menu that allows text entry even without "A" button. . .

Just the other night found a workaround without loading another program.
(I unistalled IE5 and then reinstalled.) Here's what to do.

Place a shortcut or "alias" of the program "writing palette"" (one of the stock programs in pen services) into your Windows Startup Group so that it is started up with widows and always handy on your taskbar. Whenever you need to enter text anywhere and don't have the automatic pen services icon open Writing Palette from your task bar or from Start**Programs**Pen Services. This gives you all the functionality you need. Because I'm using screen keyboard now I don't want to go into a longer tutoring session. Play around with it to discover all the ways to do things.

Be well all,
