I just want to see if anybody has successfully installed Win2k or XP on this machine. I am planning on doing so and would like some inputs from the veterans.

Also, do i need to dig up any drivers or are the native drivers from win2k / xp good enuf to get everything up and running?

Please advice.

TheBigDog: I've installed XP pro on a XL-2000 with 128MB of RAM and a K6-3-450. The install went smoothly, all hardware is recognized and supported. Of course, your SL may be a bit different. It should work without any problems assuming your memory and CPU meet the minimum install requirements.

How do you install a K6-3-450 and how fast are you running it at and at what voltage? I looked at the motherboard manual and it only support up to 6 multiplier and 66 Mhz so I figure 400Mhz is the maximum.

I tried to plug in a K6-2 475 and TRIED to set the core voltage to 2.4 and it just didn't work as the power was only on for a split second and it automatically shuts down. It seems like it shorted something out in the power supply cuz' I had to wait for a while to be able to turn the machine back on (over current circuit protection takes time to RESET). And when it is back on, I just use my stock K6-2 300 @ 2.2V core and it works fine. Any ideas?

TheBigDog: I did a bit of reading and it seems that the SL is an older box than the XL. It likely does not have support for the 100FSB like the XL.

As far as the K6-2-475 goes, the BIOS may not support the chip. Some machines will still run with an (officially) unsupported CPU, others don't. Try upgrading to the latest version of the BIOS (if it is available). I have some K6-3-450+'s that won't run in half of the machines that "should" support them.

Does anyone have the jumper settings for a 450 and or 500mhz CPU? My manual only goes to 300 something. Thanks

Hey Skizz,
If you have the SL series the most you can go up to is 400Mhz.

If you have the XL series I have successfully been able to use a K6-2/500 AFX CPU.

You can do this by Setting jumper J3 to 2.2 vcore
1-2 Off
3-4 On
5-6 Off
7-8 Off

Set Jumper J13 (CPU/Host Ratio) to 5.0
1-2 Off
3-4 On
5-6 On

Set Jumper J15 (CPU Clock Selection) to 100
1-2 On
3-4 On
5-6 On
7-8 Off

For a 450Mhz CPU
You would make all the changes above except for J13 which should now be set to 4.5

1-2 On
3-4 On
5-6 On

I have tried to overclock the 500Mhz CPU and I've only been able to overclock it to 525Mhz without any issues.
At 550Mhz after awhile of use it eventually locks up.
At 575Mhz I get a message on the screen, but it doesn't boot.
Trying to get it to 600Mhz was impossible, the computer won't even boot.

I've used a Pentium III heatsink and fan to cool the CPU as well as using artic silver

One day I managed to find a 525Mhz CPU (without overclocking) and I have been successfully using it at 550Mhz.

Just curious as to what OS you are using?
I'm using Win98 but I've been dying to try and put Linux on the DiskonChip, but alas I'm linux deficient.
One of these days I'll bite the bullet.
