Netier XL-1000 running BeOS off a CF card
Quiet web browser

Hey folks,

I had an XL-1000 sitting around and got to thinking. With CF cards being so cheap now, I could run a nice, quiet web browsing machine using BeOS off the machine. I have two CF to IDE adapters. One is 40 pin, the other is 44 pin. I put the CF card in a system with BeOS 5 PE on it, and installed BeOS to my 256 MB card. After install, it still had 100 MB left. I installed Firefox 1.0 PR and a few other goodies. Then, I transferred it to my XL-1000 and viola! It boots very nicely. It's none too slow even with 64 MB and no swap space.

Anyone have any low profile memory for sale?

Tom

By the way, the built in sound and network card are recognized natively by BeOS, so things work right out of the box pretty much.

I use BeOS-BeIA only on the Netiers anymore. Nothing else is so easy to set up or customise. I have one on my back deck that has a DVD drive and a dual CF to IDE adapter with eject on one of the slots. I can stream music out there, watch a movie, surf the net, make internet phone calls, and lots more. I boot off one CF card and use the other to load it with whatever software I need at the time. Now I'm looking for a decent projector so I can do movies on the side of the house this summer.

I have another Netier that I take with me on trips for surfing or gaming that has a CDRW-DVD, CF-IDE adapter, and a 20G 2.5 HDD. Be and a Netier make one of the best do-it-yourself electronics kits there is.
