Can anyone who has a ThinkNIC shed some light on its internal arrangement? I'm looking to build a cheap dedicated server, probably running the very slick e-smith server and gateway "appliance" distro. (http://www.e-smith.org for the software project, http://www.e-smith.com for the commercial support venture recentlypicked up by Mitel.)

There are two poential problems with the ThinkNIC from where I stand: 1) If I have to use a laptop drive, I've blown my price point (a 30GB laptop drive, the largest generally available, costs about twice what its 3.5" equivalent costs), and, 2) I also can't put in as much storage as I'd like (I'd really like to have 80-100 GB available, so a 3.5" drive would be the way to go, if possible.)

Question1: Is there any way to shoe-horn a 3.5" drive into a ThinkNIC? (I'd be willing to lose the CD-ROM and flash disk if that makes the room.)

Question2: Has anyone tried to run e-smith on a ThinkNIC with a HD, and does it work?

TIA,

Dub

If you remove the CD drive, Flash, and Modem, you could shoehorn a 3.5" drive in. As a bonus, you could increase the RAM with "normal" height RAM. Of course, to make it fit, you'll need to make a mounting plate. Luckily, there are 4 motherboard mounting posts that could be used for support. You'd need a support plate with 4 matching holes and 4 motherboard standoffs about 1/2" tall. Then you'd need to drill 4 more holes in the plate to attach the drive via the bottom screw holes. It'll take some work, but it's possible.
