Broadband cable/Ethernet for NIC

I am not a hacker, and don't even own a computer, just WebTV and the WebPlayer. I have an NIC on order, which has an ethernet card for cable/DSL hookup, both of which are available to me. Both the cable (ATT), and DSL (Snet) info sites state that the hookup require Windows or a Mac OS, but the NIC has a Linux OS. The cable co. said that its service will work w/Linux OSs, but they will not configure the NIC, altho they will tell me the settings , and "not support it." The phone company never replied. Should the NIC work with either, both or neither? Is the configuration the cable co spoke of difficult. In general, HELP!

If the DSL or cable modem simply provides you with an IP address (static or DHCP), and depends on the operating system's services to interface with the net, you should be okay, but you'll probably have to ask for help from NICC rather than the ISP, because they'll duck out of supporting other OSes any way they can. The NIC reportedly has a simple process for assigning dialup numbers and/or TCP/IP configuation.
If for some reason they require certain software to be installed to recognize the net connection, you're out of luck.

While it's possible that some DSL or cable modem providers require software, I'm not aware of any that do.

AOL, on the other hand, uses its own proprietary connection software, so the NIC will not run with AOL.

don't worry, be happy! the NIC works great with DSL... all you need is to assign the NIC an IP address, plug it into your hub, then assign the DNS addresses from your DSL provider... works great on the LAN!
