Any progress BadFlash ?

with your BIOS cracking/Win98 installation/Drivers,etc...
As far as I'm concerned, I've been able to run a version of an alternative OS on it. Everything works fine (keyboard, touchscreen, etc...) except that there are obvisouly no drivers for this stupid HPNA thingy that would magically turn it into an ethernet adapter or any drivers for a USB wireless adapter...As a result, it's pretty useless !
I guess the only option would be to hook up a miniPC adapter, but err...wait a minute, there's non on the motherboard is there
I hope the Win98 path works out better.
I still think CE is the way to go, but I still haven't heard of a complete CE2/0 or CE3.0 install !

Ran out of time. It runs Windows OK, got sound working, there is a thread here for the rest of the drivers except the touch screen. Very easy hack IMHO. Just not real zippy.

Can you define "Not real zippy"? You've probably overclocked your coffeemaker, so your expectations might be higher than Joe user's expectations.

As zippy as a Stock IO? Webplayer? Zippier? What does it compare to in Zip-ness?

Yes, please share. We need some sort of benchmark for the "zippyocity" of the machine. :)

No benchmarks, but I actually find it to be pretty zippy !
Much more so than the Virgin Webplayer at least.
One thing you need to rememeber is that the Transmeta Crusoe has so-called "code-morphing", which as I understand it improves performance as time passes, i.e. it somehow learns and memorizes oft recurring processes, which could in theory make it better than volatile L2 cache. For instance, it will run benchmarks faster the second time around.
Now that's the marketing hype, but I've never heard anyone come back and say it was false, so...

Doesn't look like it's a prerequisite to hack it. Would be nice to be able to leave a CF in there, but since it's not easily accessible without pulling the thing apart, it wouldn't be that useful anyway.

On the contrary...A second bootable device, which could be as large as 128 megs, would be very useful...could save your ass if a big crash happened. What's this thing about not being able to get into the BIOS screens? Is this fixable? Is the BIOS chip removable? Are there any pictures of the board around? I finally saw one at Gateway today...it is very thin....can you get a hard drive in there with the modem attached? Yellow1...that screen looks exactly like an I-Opener...wouldn't surprise me if it was exactly the same screen.

Getting into the bios would be very helpful, Bios settings might be able set the CF to secondary since it's not hot-swappable, other bios settings such to see if the floppy drive can be enabled, since according to some there is a floppy drive connector.

Bios access would be very good!

Gee, I may just pull the display off the gtc install it on the i-Opener and sell the rest of the GTC...I'm losing interest in the GTC already and I have not even got it yet...

When the I-Opener switched to the RISE CPU, it also switched to a Hitachi screen. There is no perceptable difference in the screens. I think your impression of the GTC screen and the I-Opener screen, depends entirely on the video driver setup you have.....since the screens themselves according to specs, are the same.

Has anyone tried connecting a USB keyboard to the GCT, then pressing the normal entrance keys for the BIOS at the boot? Maybe that will get you in into the BIOS.

Anyone know much about the 'Flash ROM 39SF020'?

What key combinations have been tried, normal Gateway branded motherboards use F1.

Hey, has anyone tried to use an "Airboard" wireless keyboard with a GCT to see if it will work? The GCT keyboard is an OEM version of that keyboard. If it works, you would have all of the standard windows keys and function keys...Just a thought from-

Sorry to reply to my own post. The GCT keyboard is an OEM Silitek SK-7102. The retail Silitek SK-7100 might work with the GCT. Does anyone have one of these to try? Thanks.
