WinME or Win2000?
Okay what are your thoughts?

I was wondering, Does the GCT *need* to run windows ME? What about Win2000? Has anyone actually tried an install of win2k on this thing yet? Will 2k even install on a Crusoe system?

GWIZAH,

I'm about ready to try Win98SE, WinME runs slower than snail snot. I know yellow1 said he did the comparison already, I'm a 'see for myself' kinda guy. Even though SiSoft Sandra says it's faster than my stock Rise266 iO, I can put them side-by-side and run the same apps and see the GTC is actually slower. I'm going to lose faith if I can't get this thing at least as fast as the stock iO....

I would think that the GCT would act Really slow if you installed Windows ²°°°. I tried it on a AMD K6-3 500 and it was very sluggish. But you know, give it a shot, it may work fine.

If you have copies of ME and Win2k, and a large enough hard drive, it's easy to dual-boot.....the Win2k install will do it all for you. Be sure to install Win2k after ME and install it to a second partition. This is the best way to compare systems, since the hardware is exactly the same. One of my I-Openers dual-boots like this.....Win2k has proven much faster than ME or 98. Even the benchmarks are higher. If the GCT will handle Win2k...somebody will have to find out.

Okay, so no touchscreen drivers yet?

BTW, what components would you need off the 2000 Cd? What dirs, and the like?

Oh and B'dog, what ended up happening with Win98? Did your benchmarks match what yellow1 said?

I realized I had a old version of Checkit and I was maxing out on the scale with both the I-opner an the GCT, then I went and sold my last i-Opener so I really don't have anything to compare the GTC to now.....

(I really thought the GTC was much faster than the I-Opener, and a hella of a lot easier to get Windows running on!)

I've got both... and both are slow!!

I've installed win98se on the GTC and it's as slow as a dog. I am planning on ripping out the modem and using the serial port for x-10 control. I've tried to use the Belkin fu15 something or other... worked fine for about a week and now I cant communicate with the serial port. Belkin SUCKS!!

GWIZAH,

I never got around to trying to compare the 98se to ME, yellow1's and vagitizer's posts kinda make it a moot point. If we ever get into the BIOS, there may be settings that they've got 'dumbed down' (ala the slowed-down modem in the WebPlayer) that might perk this thing up. I don't care how cool this thing looks, and the touchscreen isn't enough to make me want to keep it if it stays this slow. Sandra CPU benchmarks for the GCT are 638/236 and only 346/183 for my stock V5 iO, but I can put them side by side and run the same apps and the iO is faster. And I can still upgrade my iO CPU, a luxury the GCT doesn't give me. I'll wait and see what the BIOS holds, otherwise out with the GCT and pick up some more iOs....
