ethernet from HPNA version?

New Messageethernet from HPNA version? (modified 0 times) smee

Do we have any information yet about adapting the HPNA version to use ethernet instead?

My understanding is that there is already an RJ45 connector. Is there a hardware variation between the two versions or is it just a change in the software that comes with it?

Or, is there something simple like an internal cable that needs to be added/swapped/removed?

Anybody know anything yet?

Smee,

miniPCI cards don't have the ports on them, they are just modules. Sometimes, you can add/remove ports depending on the module you're adding, but in Gateway's case, they simply added all of the ports to simplify manufacturing.

According to the specs I've seen, when the HPNA module is installed, the modem ports are using for HPNA (eeffectively disabling the modem) and the Ethernet port is simply dead. When the Ethernet module is installed, the modem ports are used for the modem, and the Ethernet port is used for ... Ethernet. :)

I ordered my GCT with the Ethernet module, so I should know in a few days.

HPNA AND the modem are standard, superrob...both can be used at the same time, one does not replace the other

from the Gateway site:
Touch Pad Includes:

10" Touchscreen color LCD
display
Wireless keyboard with AOL
shortcut keys
Stereo speakers & microphone
Dial up V.90 modem
Home phone line networking
(HPNA)(10 Mbps)
Option for Ethernet networking
Two USB ports
Instant AOL service

so as you can see, the modem and HPNA are standard, meaning they both exist at the same time, neither disables the other...the ethernet module is an addon

I called Gateway customer service and they said if you got the hpna mini pci card and want the ethernet mini pci card add on you have 30 days to exchange the cards. You don't have to send back the whole machine.

PS My impression is, I really don't think they know a whole lot about these machines yet...I even got a DUH response from the Tech support reps about the cards

yellow1,
are you sure you have the HPNA version and not the ethernet one?

its my understanding that HPNA networks use RJ11 plugs just like phone lines. RJ45s are for ethernet.
still waiting for mine to come, so i am a bit clueless as to whats actually on the machine. are there two RJ11s and one RJ45? or just one RJ11 and one RJ45?

thanks for clarifying...

two RJ11's and one RJ45.
I've got a sense that HPNA uses a RJ45 on the PC side and an RJ11 on the phone system side. Haven't checked though.
I'll also check tomorrow whether the GWCP I got a hold of was Ethernet or HPNA

Everything I've come across for HPNA indicates that it uses RJ-11 connectors. The Linksys stuff (I've been looking at the manuals online) usually has an in and and out connector. This allows you to daisy-chain machines (or, I guess, connect your phone without a splitter). It's possible Gateway uses a different arrangement but special cables seem to negate some of the benefit of HPNA.

If the two RJ11s are used for HPNA, I guess the modem shares one of them.

I need to get my machine so that I can start playing too.

Your regular phone only uses 2 lines in your standard 4 wire residental phone wiring, The HPNA uses the other 2 wires to send data. Therefore HPNA must use the RJ11 connecters. The RG45 connecter would be there for support of the standard 10baseT network and might be connected to the RG11 connecter too?

It would also make sense that if you have two phone lines (two phones numbers)in your house, that HPNA wouldn't work on your standard house wiring if it was connected to your phone outlets since the phone companies use that 2nd pair to run the second phone line on.

Are those people who claim that HPNA is working with their standard ethernet network, using the RG45 connecter with a standard network cable or using a reguler phone line cable to connect to a hub since a RG11 cable will plug into a RG45, but not the other way?

Ok I checked and the invoice left by the guy who gave it to me says it's the Ethernet version, I'm playing with !
My bad, sorry for any false hopes. Seems like most recent buyers got the Ethernet version anyway and I've provided a link for the drivers, so it should jump start them !

Okay guys,

quick question, Does EVERYBODY have an Rj-45 port beneath a black sticker on the back of there GCT?
Besides the issue of the missing IDE pins, Id really like to know if I have an HPNA or Ethernet version...

What HPNA Chip is soldered on the minipci card?
does it say BCM4413?
if so it does hpna, ethernet 10/100, and is also a softmodem.

I opened up my HPNA version. Near the three connectors (2xRJ11, 1xRJ45) are three headers. A cable from the HPNA card goes to one of them (2 wires) - I assume this is the RJ11 for HPNA but I didn't track the traces. Another cable goes from the modem card to the second connector - again 2 wires. There's a vacant connector (4 wires? I forget) that I assume connects to the RJ45. So, the RJ45 is probably not attached to anything inside.

It looks like Ethernet is only available through the appropriate card or USB.

I've already closed mine up again, so I'm not sure of this, but...

I don't think the HPNA or Ethernet cards are miniPCI. The HPNA card is not plugged into a socket like the modem. (Unless I'm confused and I've got the modem and HPNA cards backwards).

Yes, you have them switched, the modem is the long rectangular block with 4 screws, just like the iopener.

The HPNA or ethernet card is in the mini PCI slot, the HPNA ones have a black chip that has the letters "PCA" on them, if you take it out of the slotted connecter on the back it has the Broadcom chip, model number HM-10M/D1A and the fcc license info DK4 TAI-47044-M5-E

What's the GCT ethernet card look like? Does it use the slot as well as a separate cable like the HPNA does?

The ethernet version has a standalone miniPCI card with no connectors attached.
I posted the exact references and a link to the drivers in another thread, from memory it's a Realtek8139C chip on an Actiontec board.

From BigDog's post, it doesn't sound like there's a cable coming out of the HPNA card. Are you maybe confusing with the modem ? The Ethernet version's modem has that black rectangular modem plugged in an IDE style connector and has a cable connecting nearby the RJ-11 plug.

Actually I just popped mine open (HPNA) and there is a cable coming from the card to CN20 on the mobo. It appears the modem is connected to CN30 while the other cable is for the HPNA. So you say the Mini PCI ethernet is just standalone, no cables?

...anybody wanna sell a MiniPCI ethernet card?

This may be an option for those that got the HPNA unit, wince, and win98 drivers too. It is a CF ethernet adaptor,
looks promising.

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/reviews/trendnet_tecf100.asp

on another note, http://www.nomadjukebox.net/ has the 6gig 9.5 mm drives back up, they are 54.95 now, still better than Computergeeks price, i ordered 2.
