Hate to clutter this board up, but I've been getting lots of E-Mail on this topic, so I figured it was time to post.

I've updated by website to accept orders for 4" GCT cables. These are designed to mount the drive between the IDE header and the CPU. You will need to grind pin 44 side of the connector if you want to keep the modem, but it works if you do. At least mine did. A sander or grinder will work. See www.badflash.com and go to the IOPENER section. Price is the same as for an IOPENER cable.

The drives I list there also work on the GCT. I can also make custom cables for those who want to add a CD.

Bubbadog just suggested I provide cables like in his picture. This would be a 10.5" cable for mounting the drive like in his hack. I'll be doing that shortly.

The cables I currently offer do not require you to make any shield mods. The drive fits quite nicely at the top above the bar.

In mounting the drive between the CPU & IDE header, what are you attaching the drive to?

you can use the standoff thats near the ide connector. not the standoff for the modem, the shorter standoff near it. you can mount a plate on top of that standoff and the standoff of the same height near the top of
the GCT. I shortened the ide connector down to around an inch or inch and a half. otherwise the long ide cable gets in the way of putting the shielding back on or puts too much pressure on the hard drive. the drive is mounted about a half inch closer to the top of the GCT than the IDE header is. otherwise that big metal bracket on the shielding will come down onto the drive.

I'm not attaching it to anything. It doesn't need it. I use a little shipping tape to insulate the drive and hold it in place toward the top of the case between the heat sink and the IDE header. With a 12.7mm drive the fit is perfect and the shield keeps it in place. The stiffener bar prevents downward motion, the shield upward motion. Low tech, but works and very easy.

Same for my mounting hack, a piece of insulating plastic to cover the HD circuit board and a few thin pieces of double backed foam tape to hold it to the GCT mobo so I can unplug the cable from the drive when I want to upload something to the drive from outside the unit. My 9.5mm drive's mounted to the RF shield. Next to the CPU heatsink - didn't modify the heatsink. It's rotated at a funny angle so that two of the holes in the shield line up with two of the holes in the drive. Two screws through these holes hold it in place. There's electrical tape on the shield between it and the drive - this does block about a third of the vent holes. I removed some of the plastic on the back of the case to allow for the screw heads. This is not visible from the outside but you can see the screws through the holes.

The only problem I've had with this arrangement is that you have to connect the cable while you're holding the shield close to the board - the cable I'm using is pretty short.

For my second, I'll try mounting the drive where the modem is (used to be).

Just got my Hard Drive Mounted in my GCTP. I used a very simple aluminum bracket. I have ordered a Custom Cable from
BadFlash that will allow installation of an Internal Shark Avatar Drive. If your not familiar with these, they are
250MB removable (Zip Like) storage. Normally in a External Parallel Form Factor, this drive has been removed rom the
case. I noticed it had a standard 44 pin header...Hmmm... Dammitt, it worked. I have not measured the height of the
drive, but it fits PERFECTLY in the spot where the Modem WAS. As of this writing, the only thing left to do is:

1. Nibble the RF shield where it covers the Opening of the external port.
2. Get my Cable from BadFlash.
3. Fab a few angled Aluminum mounting brackets.

If We ever get into the BIOS, would'nt it be a surprise if it were bootable...??

I have posted a number if images here:

http://y42.photos.yahoo.com/bc/jjqp/lst?.view=t&.dir=/GCTP+Drive+Mounting

The Mounting bracket itself is still a bit rough, but gives enough clearance, and is still BELOW the level of the
heat Sink. Also check out the Color of the Drive Face.... Could'nt get any Closer. <g>

I Did not have to nibble the Stand Support piece on the back of the RF shield, I placed the drive just outside enough
to miss it.

So Far So Good... I will post the end result later.

Happy Hacking,

JohnQPyro

JohnnyQ, what a sweet fit! the media is expensive but I see you can buy the bare drive for $40. save you from buying the whole drive and taking it apart.
