I received my GCT today. I don't know if it is HPNA or Ethernet. On the rear it has both RJ45 and 2 phone sockets. Does it mean it has both HPNA and Ethernet. I have not opened it yet. I really wanted the Ethernet version. Before I return it back I wanted to see if someone as an answer.
Also, could someone post the pros and cons of HPNA vs Ethernet ?

Thanks in advance !

Quick, flip your gateway touchpad over....Does it have a Black sticker over the ethernet port? If it does you have an HPNA version....If not, you have an ethernet version. Just to be on the safe side, you may want to open it up...Dont worry mine didnt have any stickers or anything to the effect of "warranty void if removed" so go ahead.

Just remember to clean up any incriminating evedince... Snickers wrappers, Beer can pull tabs, fingernail clippings...

if you have the case opened and the shield off then another way to tell for sure is to look at the card in the miniPCI slot. if it has two wires coming off it connected to the motherboard then it is an HPNA card. if it does not have the two wires then it is the ethernet card. do not confuse this card with the separate modem card which is mounted on four standofs with screws.

another way might be to look at the shipping (packing list) label on the box -

mine says "Part Description: Kepler Internet Appliance with Ethernet"

or the part number 2800054 - on the label

also located on the tag under the "feet"

So, what is the pros and cons of havving HPNA vs Ethernet.
If I have to install a harddrive would I have to remove the mini pci card?

You shouldn't need to remove the mini-pci at all, the HPNA is actually a 10mb home phone network card and a modem, the ethernet one is actually 10/100 ethernet (Gateway states that it's 10mb ethenet). The HPNA version actually have 2 modems in them. as there is also a actiontek 56k modem (it's the daughter card held in place by 4 screws)

One option for hard drive install is to remove the Actiontek modem but you don't have to do that either if you want to keep it in as you can install the drive in between the IDE header and CPU and use a little tape to insulate the drive from the motherboard.

Most important issue to remeber is that you do NOT want any pressure on the top of the drive or the ability for anything to press down on the top of it. The 2.5" drives do not have a strong top cover(which I can't figure out why not? I guess they try to make the drives as lite as possible).
