If I get the ethernet card option, am I still able to use the modem to connect to regular dial-up ISP?
or is it one or the other?

Can you stop asking all these "stupid" questions ? If you had read the threads, you'd know that only three people have (said they had)one here, Badflash, Bigdork1 and myself and none has an ethernet card as far as I know !
Let me ask you something, when you've got an ethernet card in your computer, can you still use your modem ?
Also, the ethernet card replaces the HPNA card, so take a wild guess...

From what I've seen in the pictures on the Gateway website, Geno might be on to something. The picutres show ALL of the ports available on both models. I seems to reason that the modem ports are used for HPNA when that miniPCI card is installed, but if the Ethernet module is installed, those ports get used for the modem, and the Ethernet port is then enabled. Stands to reason, as the modem chip is apparently onboard. Plus, the MiniPCI cards they're using don't have the ports ON the card, they're just modules.

As for the "stupid" question, Yellow ... YES. I have both Ethernet and a modem in my home computer, and nothing stops me from using both at the same time. There's no such thing as a stupid question. And if that was such a stupid question, why'd you give a wrong answer?

Tolerance, people. We were all newbies once, and miniPCI is a new enough technology, that it's possible that even us computing veterans may not have all the answers.

i don't see where yellow1 gave any wrong answer...he was pointing out that you CAN use your ethernet and modem at the same time in a home PC, so why would you not be able to with this machine...you missed the point, superrob...and you are wrong about the GCT itself...from another thread where you were incorrect is my response:

HPNA AND the modem are standard, superrob...both can be used at the same time, one does not replace the other

from the Gateway site:
Touch Pad Includes:

10" Touchscreen color LCD
display
Wireless keyboard with AOL
shortcut keys
Stereo speakers & microphone
Dial up V.90 modem
Home phone line networking
(HPNA)(10 Mbps)
Option for Ethernet networking
Two USB ports
Instant AOL service

so as you can see, the modem and HPNA are standard, meaning they both exist at the same time, neither disables the other...the ethernet module is an addon

Irrespective of who's right or wrong, the disagreement proves the point. Everything's up for discussion, and it's practically never a good idea to term someones thoughts, comments or questions "stupid."

Well, I have an idea maybe just maybe this thing uses a variant of HPNA card like the ones I have ,which have the functionality of 10BT and HPNA at the same time. (as in both use the same controller). I think that this is very likely. I also know of a source of HPNA/10Bt cards for less than $5 each, they are HPNA V1.0(1MBpS). HPNA V2.0 is back ward compatable with V1.0 .

I forgot to mention that you cannot use the HPNA and 10Bt connectors at the simultaneously, as I am sure someone is more than willing to point out. Rather I am saying the cards I have have both types of connectors and you can use either just not at simultaneously. No I dont care what anyone thinks of my spelling, thank you for any concerne.

Hey Randy, are you on some kind of crusade here ?...
Take a look at the guy's other posts and you'll understand OUR frustrations.
Irrespective, if the HPNA and Modem cards work at the same time, it's OBVIOUS that the Ethernet and Modem cards will work at the same time.
I've actually found out for a fact that they do.
End of story.

not to bicker, but I didn't say he was stupid, just that his endless questions were.
Interestingly, the guy has dropped off the face of...this msg board. Unless he's back under a different name of course...
