Swapping Bios chips

Ok, I have a GCT in that has the older bios that will allow entry into the CMOS setup.

When I swap the older bios to a newer GCT, I get nothing but the power light button (no logo, no beeps, nothing)

When I swap the newer bios into the older GCT, I get the regular gateway logo but still can't enter setup as normal. (the older bios has a different logo screen on boot, it shows the AOL & Gateway logos togather with no color)

I have tried with and without the CF, hard drives and no IDE device. I have removed the cmos battery but no luck.

Anyone got any ideas?? If this works, it's going to Badflash, if it doesn't, it goes back to it's owner to enjoy.

Who Mentioned there's a Security Chip on the Motherboard ???
I WoNdEr how that is Tied in ???

You could measure outside Dimension of the Contacts to Make sure the Size is Very Close.
There could? be a Connection Problem ?

I don't think its a connection problem..... I believe it's some sort of chipset ID issue.... still working on it....

Do you have 2 GCT's of the same vintage? Idea being to do a byte compare on 2 BIOS chips that aren't radically different to see if there is some ID code in each chip. If so, then that could give you a start to finding for replacing. Yes, systems should be identical for mass production, but there are fingerprints available through embedded chip serial numbers, etc. Who knows?

The chip is on the way to Badflash and the image file will be available soon in-order to compare and hack the two togather. Hint.. Hint... Wild Pencil or Programmer ???

One thing, I am thinking now that the 26 pin header on the mainboard isn't a floppy interface but rather a LPT1 header. The bios setup I saw had nothing on the floppy drive settings or even any reference to the floppy. It did have settings for the LPT1, a standard desktop motherboard has a 26 pin header for the LPT1 port. Anyone want to assume the standard pinout holds true and try hooking up a external printer port to it?

Getting ever so close to all being revealed, I'm really hating letting mine go (sniffle, sniffle). Hopefully I can pick up another next month or so at the 'AOL User Special Price' before they're history....

SInce you've been able to get into the BIOS, can you tell us what we're missing in terms of available settings, etc...

We aren't missing out of a whole lot; memory timing, general port stuff (com1, com2..), boot management. I was hoping that that 26 pin header was a floppy interface and hoped to enable it but there isn't an option to due so or set the floppy drive type.

One thing you can do of course is turn the Gateway logo off when booting, and there was a lot of power management options, enabling/disabling sound and the USB. One thing I was disappointed not to find in the boot options was a method to boot from USB, some of the similer release versions of the Phoenix bios includes USB boot as a possible option

FYI - to tell the difference between the two different GCT versions, the older one's boot logo includes graphics of AOL and Gateway in black and white next to each other with the unit boots; The newer versions just show the Gateway green and white logo when booting.
